Ive gone snowboarding a couple times last year but I dont remember which foot I had in front, I was on my ass mosto f the time anyhow. Well Im going snowboarding next week so I was trying to figure out if I should go goofy or regular by doing some test I was reading about online. One was to have my arms streched out in front of me and have some one pull me forward and see which foot goes forward first. Well it was pretty random, sometimes it was left and sometimes right. I also tried another test where I try sliding on a tile floor with socks on... I tend to have my left foot forward on this test, anyone know anyhting else i can try?

Pay someone to randomly come up behind you and push you when you least expect it. Whatever foot goes out.

I don't snowboard, but i'm goofy :) Skiing rocks.

To clarify, get someone to push you while you least expect it. Whatever foot you put in front of you to brace yourself should be at the front of the board when you are standing on it.

I'm goofy myself.

*edit* left foot=goofy
right foot=normal

THe most common is to have someone push you from behind and whatever foot you put out in front to brace yourself, should be the foot forward on your snowboard. I dunno what's up with N8Magic but left foot forward is regular and right foot forward is goofy. But don't think about it when you get pushed else you might put the wrong foot out.

I guess other tests are what foot is forward if you were to slide on ice, or what foot if you threw a baseball, or I think what foot you bring up first if you're running up some stairs. I was regular for every test except the sliding on ice one. I suck so much at switch though and I hate practicing cause it looks like I'm a first day person or something till I turn regular and bust out. :)

This was never hard for me to figure out. Jump on a skateboard. Which way feels more natural to go? It's not tough.

Alien and N8, woah woah woah.

That isn't exactly sound advice at all. For people who do not know which way of riding they wish to use, I wouldn't figure it out like that.
You would want your foot with more strength (generally the dominate foot) to be at the BACK of the board. Why? When you snowboard you will find that whichever foot is at the back of the board requires the most strength. When you care you kick your back foot out or behind you to achieve the carving direction you want. Its not as easy as just leaning the way you want to go.
Sooner or later things get smoother and that kicking motion becomes less and less a "kick".. but hey.

I wish I had this advice before I was determining which way to use, although most people know naturally.

yep.

If somebody pushed me I do believe my right foot would go out but socks on a hardwood floor I'd definitely put left in front. I went snowboarding last year for the first time ever goofy style and I'm totally positive that it's right for me :)

The stance you have in a batter's box is the most natural, I think. I'm right-side oriented and left foot forward (like you stand when batting) just seems more intuitive.

Think this is correct.
And right handed = right footed.

Well if you've ever used a shovel, which foot do you put out first for that? That should be your lead foot!

how would batting have any connection with it? i would think batting would have more connection with which hand you write with

I'm goofy.. What you can do is just grab a skateboard and try to ride it, push off and see what foot you put in front.

Maybe I'm not understanding your description (or I don't know what i'm talking about :)), but is that really how a good carve is initiated? Big, smooth carves come more from the (sharp) edge. Edges are curved for a reason. You can use your weight and hip rotation to dig them in, and then the turn just follows the natural curve of the edge, right?

Woah!

My mistake gentlemen! I don't know WHAT I was thinking. I have only snowboarded twice, and I DO snowboard goofy. I guess thats what I get for rushing my reply. :p

Its more or less a weight distrobution/ edge transfer with ease because you aren't very often doing big sleek carves unless your in the pow. Or at least at a nice resort.. Ontario = Flat.

Some people are just different..
Goofy isn't common despite what ya see here ;)

On a related note, but in regards to skateboarding

If your regular footed, you push off with your right foot [back foot]
If your goofy, you push off with the left foot [back foot]

What the hell is it called when a regular footed person [or vice-versa for goofy]
pushes off with their left foot [front foot], then twist their body into the riding stance?

I dont know, but always that is was fuggin ugly ;)

I don't think that's true. If that was the case, most people would be goofy foot, and it's called goofy, not regular, for a reason.

I'm left handed and goofy, my friends are right handed and regular.

Whoever said the leg strength thing is right on.. it has nothing to do with being right handed.. I'm left foot forward because the left foot can't do as much stressful work as the right.. then again there is the question of whether or not you ride Hawaiian style because which foot you use really wouldn't matter much (crazy stance IMHE I gathered unless you 360 a lot or something and even then I can't do it very well) i.e. feet in an equal V footing pattern.. the norm that I know is the usual front foot mostly moved towards the front of the board but at a slight angle and the back foot angled the other way but with a more steep angle (facing mostly the side in angle more than the back and modified for preference or weight) than the front foot riding.. really wish I knew the slang term for normal riding and the way I explained it sucks..

Maybe he meant "Right handed = Left foot forward" but even that is not always true.. just depends on which foot you prefer to have your weight on more of the time..
