Hey guys,

This chick I met says she can't sleep after drinking alcohol, especially red wine. She says she literally can't fall asleep and will stay up to 3-4 am...

I've never heard of this. Is this a documented event or is she a psycho?

Glutamine rebound also plays a role as when someone is drinking; alcohol inhibits glutamine, one of the body's natural stimulants. When the person stops drinking, the body tries to make up for lost time by producing more glutamine than it needs. The increase in glutamine levels stimulates the brain while the drinker is trying to sleep, keeping him/her from reaching the deepest levels of sleep.

Maybe this, glutamine ftl!

People usually sleep terribly after consuming alcohol. How much wine does she consume?

Also, way to show your class calling her a psycho for this.

The glutamine explains why you don't sleep well, but its probably not preventing you from sleeping. Alcohol generally has a sedative effect on most people (when talking about hours).

Maybe, when she drinks she tends to be socializing (partying even just hanging out with friends playing video games). Or maybe she tends to drink on days that she's well rested so she stays up longer (i.e. slept in Saturday morning, then went out Saturday night).

Plus if you eat or consume sugar and/or caffeine. I know some women that eat quite a bit of sweet food when drinking wine.

Helllooooo, she's telling you that if you get her drunk she'll still be up for a whole night of kinky sex!

I sleep especially well after drinking large amounts of alcohol and coffee.

I normally sleep like shit after drinking. Depending when I stop drinking, and how much I drink depends on the time of night I won't be able to sleep. Sometimes I wake up at like 6 am even after staying out late and unable to fall back asleep.

doesn't matter if you fall asleep, you get rem free sleep if you are drunk

I know its not good sleep, but I always wake up super early feeling refreshed after I've been up late drinking (getting drunk is a different story though).

I also have difficulty sleeping too when I drink... I also have the Asian flush so when I drink, I get sort of an allergic reaction where I'd red splotches all over my body(kinda like a cow). I can't sleep because I feel like shit and when I do fall asleep, it tends to wake me up earlier in the morning than if had I slept without drinking the night before. Takes about 6 beers to get to this which is rare for me... It'd have to be a hell of a reason(like a wedding) for me to do this to myself cuz I hate it.

I'd just smoke pot if I were you.

Red wine does her bad? Switch to red flavored Night Train, but be careful, she might not wake up.

Interesting. I honestly think it's the glutamine. She is skinny and looks like she has a fast metabolism. And she doesn't have to be out partying, she can just drink at home or whatever and same effect, so it's definitely not the sugar or caffeine.

I found this strange because personally I sleep pretty well after alcohol. If I drink a glass of wine or a beer or two before bed I pass out like a rock and feel super refreshed the next day.

Although if I drink heavily, it's a 50/50, I could be passed out all day, or I could wake up super early.

It's a well known side effect. It doesn't affect me, but many people it does.

I sometimes have this. Not so much with hard liquor, but with relatively carb-intense, low-alcohol content drinks like wine and (cheap) beer.

Wine has tons of sugar in it. And the alcohol is metabolized into sugar as well. I usually sleep like shit after drinking. Normally I can fall asleep just fine though.. I just wake up and toss and turn most of the night afterward.

The sugar?

All hard liquors do that to me. Beer and wine are hit and miss - I sleep shittily, but it blocks out the voices in my head keeping me from sleeping. Hard liquor plus 4am bed time = win... Just straight go out.
