Can't decide between PS3 Slim and New Xbox 360

I guess I am unique in that I have all my game platforms in one room (as do most of my friends). Therefore, we are usually chatting on the PC already when we decide to play a game.

None of my friends are that way. We all have our consoles in a den or living room while our computers are in an office. My computers are on a completely different floor.

never said it was because it was faster, i just said that is one of hte benefits of xbl over psn - that you get system wide updates faster on 360 than ps3, which is distributed via xbl and psn.

But that isn't a real benefit.

If sony started releasing 1kb updates, would you call that a benefit?

Didn't think so.

umm yes, i would call that a benefit. there have been quite a few times where i turn my ps3 on and can't get online until i download the update, which in turn makes my other friends that i was going to play with wait 20 minutes or so until it is done downloading.

more than once i have just said fuck it and turned off the ps3 and played something else on 360 instead.

ok folks...one question. can you surf the web with the xbox360?

What is your point? That hardly makes the PS3 a "computer" (as you claimed earlier) while the 360 isn't. It would be a simple software update to the 360. And besides that, the PS3 web browser sucks so why would anyone use it?

Second of all, since we're being petty and started posting pictures of BLUE RAYS, your second point is flawed logic, its an opinion...the internet is the MAIN feature i use on my PS3 bc its a COMPUTER...since we're using flawed logic here ;-)

Yes, calling the PS3 a computer simply because it has an internet browser is extremely flawed logic. Thanks for admitting it. 🙂 Both consoles are actually computers. In fact, if we go back to Xbox 1, Microsoft literally used off-the-shelf components like Celerons and standard hard drives to build it.

2. I don't agree. I've used XBL, and I don't see any advantages worth paying for.

You and I are probably quite a bit alike. I have both consoles and while Xbox Live is nice and probably has lots of cool features, the only thing I do (rarely) is play games like Madden online or use Netflix. And quite frankly, I think it is BS that I have to pay for the Gold membership to use Netflix. So for me, PSN is probably adequate.

I currently have 2 Xboxes and both have Gold, but I will very likely not renew one of them (the one I play on) whereas the one downstairs I'll probably renew since my wife uses it for Netflix. Or, since we have a Wii down there, I might see how the Netflix implementation on it looks and we may just go with that and use the Xbox down there just as a media extender.

Alright, thanks guys. I picked up a PS3 today.

Any must have programs? What's the best way to stream media? I have tried to use wmp 12 in windows 7 and have only found success streaming music if it is physically located in the "My music" directory. Even if I connect music using the libraries function or shortcuts, they won't display.

Do I need something like ps3 media player or tversity?

I cant comment on the music I always just did it with the disc or a flash drive. Make sure you get Little big planet, GOW and uncharted. Those games are very good

Well, for movies, you might check out PS3 Media Server. I've used it to serve movies stored in ISO format to my PS3. I believe it does music as well but I haven't tried.

As far as games, I enjoy GoW (GoW Collection and GoW III) and I also have MLB 10 The Show, which is cool but I haven't played much of recently.

I got the media streaming to work. After trying everything I just did a hard reboot of the computer and the ps3 then it finally picked it up.

When the PSN is working correctly, it's always worked better and faster for me and my friends than Xbox Live. In particular, my PS3 will pull 1MB/s (megabyte / sec) downloads at my university (6mb/s download connection). My roommates 360 would only pull about half of that. Of course, this isn't an exact measurement. I did have a watch along to compare, though...I wasn't just counting in my head.

As for having connection issues with individual games, I've not experienced anything that wasn't fixed by a patch in the game. Things have been pretty stable for me. Then again, I've gamed on PCs for a long while, and having different issues per game is common for me. And I do prefer the PSN as a service compared to PC gaming. PC gaming is free...PSN is still free. Sounds good to me.

I know a lot of people complain about the PSN being slow. I've experienced it before on my home Comcast connection, and it's a much faster connection than the one at my university. That said, I've posted fixes for that if it's really a big issue. You can either use the Privoxy program on your computer as a proxy server that your PS3 uses, or you can try a different modem. The Linksys CM100 did the trick for me. This fixed all of my PSN issues related to downloading speeds, including firmware updates, downloads from the store, and patches for games. Suddenly I'm not waiting 10-20 minutes for a firmware update. I'm not really waiting for anything anymore. Even my Wi-Fi speeds are quick. When no one else is using the network at home, I've seen the PSN pull downloading speeds of 3MB/s (again, megabyte/sec). I believe my parents pay for 10mbps/1mbps, though Powerboost puts that around 20/3.

I'm not sure what causes this. I'm not sure if Sony/PSN is messed up, if it's something with most people's networking, or if it's the majority of ISPs. As I've said before, the PSN has always been super quick when we had Insight as our ISP. When Comcast bought them out, the PSN turned to crap. This was on the exact same networking setup in my house. Just an ISP change. I really don't know what causes it, as it works just fine at my university as well.

For all of you complaining about how the PSN is slower than XBL, I've posted fixes. I agree that you shouldn't have to do it for a better PSN connection, and it won't fix everyone's issues (most, though). However, the fixes are easy. One requires 5 minutes of your time setting up Privoxy. When gaming on PSN, you need that computer on with the program running for the fix to work (and to stay connected). Yes, this might be inconvenient for some. The other is just trying out a different modem. As I said, you shouldn't have to...but it's really not difficult or time consuming. I see a lot of people complaining about how slow the PSN is. Well, if it's really THAT big of an issue, take the time to try these out of you haven't. I'm even going to post a link to the thread I created about it a year ago:

Wow this threads reminds me of when i was a child and arguing on the IGN boards back in the PS2 VS Xbox Vs Dreamcast days, I see some of us have not grown up yet.
