I have a situation that is driving me nuts. My friends machine running Win98 (first rev.) wouldn't let him connect to the net anymore. Well it connected just the browser wouldn't let him browse the net, check mail, or even ICQ would not find any servers. So I did the usual, reinstalled explorer (was running 5.5 took it back to 5.1) not it. Then went on to the network control panel and discovered that TCP/IP wasn't bound to the dial up adapter. So I deleted everything in the window and reinstalled Tcp/ip and dial up adapter and nothing just lists
Dial up adapter
TCP/IP

Just like that I tried installing a client and nothing either. So I reinstalled Win98 over it's self and that didn't help. So then I upgraded to Win98SE (which has saved my hinny several times) but still won't do it. Arrggg! Am I missing something? I am trying to avoid a full format and install, which if it was my machine I would have done hours ago. Is there anything at all I can do here to avoid what looks like the inevitable?
Thanks

try reinstalling dial up networking, also make sure there is only 1 winsock.dll and 1 wsock32.dll. winsock.dll should be 21K, wsock32.dll should be 42K.

just remove tcp/ip and add it again. it should automatically bind tcp/ip to the dial up adapter.

If he is able to connect, but cannot do anything, there could be a couple of things:

Make sure you specified DNS (usually just webpages), but this helps. Your ISP will give you the primary and secondary IPs.

Reinstall communications. Add/Rem -> Win Setup -> Commmunications. Deselect, reboot, go back, check it, reboot.

I'm guessing he's on dialup. Try the latest drivers and firmware for his/her modem.

Reinstall Communications? hehehe

Communications is only a category of Apps, that include DUN, which he said he reinstalled already several times. ;)

You are correct Whitedog I have done all of that, to no avail. So I reformated and reinstalled Windows and whala works ok. The network portion of it is still flaky, but the internet side is rock solid. I found out he got this thing from a business auction and God only knows what it had done to it before this. A huge luckout on my part is that the machine is all Aopen which I have to say has one of the best support sites for drivers I have ever seen. All the parts in the case were clearly marked with part numbers that actually match the driver links......color me VERY impressed. So I just downloaded all the latest drivers and formated and reinstalled with all new drivers and this machine is running like a champ.
Thanks for all the help guys I appriciate it!

I've found reinstalling communications fixes problems such as this. At times, I've been on the phone with customers for ~30min just explaining to them how the Network CP works, and fixing their problems.

I've had a similar problem such as this on my home machine, which was then running Win98. I was having problems with TCP/IP for my 3Com NIC, and I removed everything and added it all back in, which included reinstalling the NIC. Thereafter, I was unable to maintain a connection, let alone dial half of the time. Seeing that I'm supposed to be a "Senior Support Technician", I figured that there wasn't much else left to do, but I reinstalled communications, and bam, it worked. I'm just taking my personal experiences with things, that's all.

Oh I agree totally Geekish Thoughts, used the same proceedure many times myself. That is why I was so confused when it didn't work.
Thanks
