I posted the same question in the OS forums and got no replies, so here it goes again...

last nite i freshly installed windows on my main computer as i replaced the mobo. the DVDROM drive in question was fine before i installed SP2. now it seems to be reading the dvds fine - autoplay works and i could play files in wmp or view pics in a slideshow. the problem is it wont let me access the file tree through folders or windows explorer. when i double click on it nothing happens selecting the path through a pulldown menu ends up in the same deadend. does anyone have any idea what may have possibly caused it? i installed the ASPI driver (forgot which version) before patching the windows btw... uninstalling nero didnt help either..

Go lookup this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

tell us what values you have for Upperfilters and Lowerfilters.

Also, ASPI (Adaptec SCSI Programming Interface) is one buggy SOB but it's probably unrelated to your current problems.

I didn't see your post on the OS forum, sorry.

wow, thx for the reply :D
come to think of it, nforce driver set is another culprit for the anomaly.

i am not too sure what you mean by Upperfilters and Lowerfilters, i am not seeing those keys or string/binary values.

this is what i have :

Upperfilters and Lowerfilters are used to "modify" or add functionality to a driver class. CD/DVD Burners often use filter drivers to add the needed burning functionality to a generic CDrom driver. If you don't have any there is a good chance that you have some sort of GUI related issue preventing you from expanding that tree. You could be missing a filter driver as well.

How does it behave if you jump to command line and navigate the folders that way using "cd" and "dir" ?
Have you tried deleting the device from device manager and letting it redetect?

wonder why i never thought of that! :D cd/dir works just fine, will try reinstalling the device and report back :)

EDIT : reinstalling was a no go :( should i try uninstall/reinstalling nforce drivers? this is the only issue holding me back from making a ghost image... dont tell me i am gonna have to reinstall windows after all this tweak/installation i done since last nite :)

Yeah, you've probably got some sort of Shell / GUI issue going. You can try reinstalling the latest IE servicepack and/or SP2 as somewhat of a hammer to fix the problem.

If you are certain the problem popped up after SP2, you can give MS a call and they will troubleshoot a SP issue free of charge. Since you don't have root cause you can't say for certain this wouldn't happen again if you did a reinstall. Get some help from MS instead of reloading.

thx for trying to help but i do not have a phone...
i reinstalled nforce drivers and on the next boot up i was able to access the drive with no difficulty
.. or so i thought then all of a sudden the explorer window closes on itself (didnt crash or anything) and the same old problem again...
at least now i know its something with the nforce chipset. hdd is working flawless tho. feels much snappier than that km400 bs i upgraded from :D

EDIT : ok, i finally figured it out thru fiddling with dvdrom drive properties screen. unticking "Enable CD Recording on this drive" under recording tab fixed it in one swift move :D i suppose the built-in cd recording thingy was somehow conflicting with the ASPI. well i am glad i can make a ghost image now :D
