Can't access 192.168.1.1 for settings on linksys wrt54g

The manual indicates that you have to enter 192.168.1.1 to enter the admin settings. But I just get an error/timeout. My vague recollection is that I used something else in the past. Not sure why. It might have been 192.168.1.100. But that is now bringing up my Brother 2170W wireless network printer settings.

How do I find out the ip address to access the router? Isn't there some straightforward way?

When I run ipconfig, I get the following:

IPV4 address: 192.168.1.101 (Preferred)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.1

I would rather not reset the router because I don't want to have to reconfigure my wireless printer. Is my wireless printer somehow interfering?

the "default gateway" in your IPconfig settings should be the router. Punch that IP into your web browser.

According to your Data.

The computer os 192.168.1.101

Printer 192.168.1.1.100

Router 192.168.1.1

If you are trying to connect to the Router via Wireless, try temp. a cable connection for this purpose.

I am not trying to connect to the router via wireless. My PC (that I am typing from right now and trying to connect on) is connected via an ethernet cable to the router.

When I put in 192.168.1.1, Internet Explorer just says that it cannot display the webpage. Normally the login/password box would pop up. I don't know what to do anymore.

You appear to be connected with no router performing NAT in between you and your ISP. Those addresses that I put in bold are not local/private IPs.

is the router hosed? I mean it works if I use it reg. But what im trying to do is add dd-wrt so I can put it in the living room and bridge this and the one hooked to the modem. (Im assuming that can be done?)

I guess it's possible that you didn't successfully flash it? I've never installed 3rd party firmware on a SOHO router (only because I haven't needed to), but if your Router was working fine before, and now it doesn't work after you tried to flash it, then it seems pretty obvious that it didn't flash correctly. Not sure if you've got options to recover, or if it's trash now...someone that has experience with DD-WRT or Tomato or any of the other custom firmware for SOHO routers might be able to advise you with that.

Does this post mean that you did get in once, flashed DD-WRT and now can't get in? Or have you still not been able to get in via the stock ROM?

This varies by vendor. Your ip config output indicated a 192.168.1.1 DG

What is the version of the WRT54GS? not all versions are supported

nvm, saw it is v2, what process for flashing did you follow?

That's common but there's no requirement for it, any RFC1918 range could be used. That's why you need to use the ipconfig output to find your default gateway and use that.

Plug your computer into a LAN port on the router. Statically set your computer to 192.168.1.2. Set the subnet for 255.255.255.0. Now see if you can access the router.

It doesnt give me my default gateway. It stays blank with ipconfig /all

Ill try this when i get home thanks!
