Cans and can openers: Rant of the night

Naturally, whenever I try to open these, the can opener never full cuts the lid. It always leaves small pieces of metal attaching the lid to the edge of the can. Of course, it also pushes the lid down further, preventing easy removal of the lid as well. So, you can either pry up the lid enough to drain the contents into a pot, or attempt to pry the lid off entirely with utensils.
My sister uses one of those openers that cuts around the side of the lid, so the lid won't fall in after it's cut. It's battery operated & is about the size of a computer mouse. You just attach it & it operates itself. She started using those after her boyfriend was in an accident & only has the use of his left arm. They seem to work pretty well.

1) Freeze can
2) Use jig saw to cut can in two (be sure to start thread on metal cutting saw blades first)
3) Unfreeze can
4) Enjoy two half cans of lentil soup.

Also, lentils are one of the cheapest foods known to humanity. Yet if you buy them in a can you pay almost the same price as you would for high value food. Buy a bag of lentils and make your own soup.

you are one of those people that will starve to death when you move out of mom's house, right?

or live on your own for ~1 month?

Err, I've lived alone for the past 8 years, in my own apartment for 6 of those years, and in my own house for the past year. I must always have had crappy can openers, because cans have always been a pain to open. Never sliced myself this badly before though.

get one of these

I personally have a swing away manual, but my parents have one of these. I was skeptical at first, but it really works.

If you don't want to spend the money on a good kitchen opener, get a couple of these. I can open a can with these almost as fat as a geared manual opener, and it's easy enough for my daughter to use at school when I send canned food. Are you as competent as a 12 year old girl? :^D

Btw, make sure get a real P38. Chinese knockoffs are Chinese. Nuff said ;^)

Honestly, I'm not sure what I'm more surprised at, that you send your daughter to school with canned food that requires a can opener or that the school hasn't suspended her over bringing a weapon.

I hate "easy open" can tops. They leave a lip that makes it hard to completely empty the can. Get a Swing-A-Way manual can opener. They work great, and you can start using real cans.

I've never had that problem with those cans. Unless you're scraping literally everything out of the can, in which case, you'd have to do that with regular cans as well.

I like them because you can pull them out a bit and drain the liquid off easily, and then just rip it the rest of the way open, although its not a huge difference between using a regular can opener, just slightly easier.

My wife and I still use the Swing-a-way can openers we got for wedding gifts...over 35 years ago. They still work right (almost) every time. They're getting old and loose...kind of like me, but USUALLY, when they don't open the can right...it's the way the can was seamed, not the can opener.

my mom has one of those, works great. they seem to bend/dull the cut edge on the can unlike cheapo can openers. you can even buy spare parts for them.

Oxo magnetic locking can opener. $20 at Amazon. This is the only can opener I have been completely satisfied with. Ever.

Highly recommended.
