Cans and can openers: Rant of the night

Bateluer

Lifer
I'm spoiled by canned goods with tabs that allow the easy removal of the lid. Picked up some sealed cans because they were on sale the last time I went grocery shopping, the kind without tabs. Naturally, whenever I try to open these, the can opener never full cuts the lid. It always leaves small pieces of metal attaching the lid to the edge of the can. Of course, it also pushes the lid down further, preventing easy removal of the lid as well. So, you can either pry up the lid enough to drain the contents into a pot, or attempt to pry the lid off entirely with utensils.

This led to a centimeter long gash on my thumb and my wearing a lentil soup all down the front of my shirt. Washed the gash thoroughly but I have no band aids left, so I've soaked a piece of paper towel in Bactine, wrapped it around my thumb, and tapped it securely.

No more canned goods, unless they have screw off lids or tabs.

I hate "easy open" can tops. They leave a lip that makes it hard to completely empty the can. Get a Swing-A-Way manual can opener. They work great, and you can start using real cans.

Buy a decent can opener, for christ's sake. If you spend ~$10 for one it should open cans very easily.

This is probably the most pathetic rant I've EVER read on this board.

I could understand if you were complaining about trying to drain a can of tuna and the lid folded in half getting gross tuna juice all over you..

but come on man.. I think most 8-year-olds got the can opener mastered..

apply for a billion dollar grant to endlessly study can openers and never come to a conclusion.

Bam.

If you don't want to spend the money on a good kitchen opener, get a couple of these. I can open a can with these almost as fat as a geared manual opener, and it's easy enough for my daughter to use at school when I send canned food. Are you as competent as a 12 year old girl? :^D

Btw, make sure get a real P38. Chinese knockoffs are Chinese. Nuff said ;^)

I find that if I keep going until I have almost cut all the way around, the lid will begin to angle up so that the contents can easily be poured out. Maybe my can opener is just better than yours?

Wow. I use a manual opener. If you stop before if cuts the whole can it won't sink down. Stopping just before it's completely cut also tilts it up a little. Even with barely any fingernails I can pry it up. And then open it like it has a hinge. I have NEVER cut myself on a can...EVER. Thread Fail.

I have never experienced such difficulties with a can opener.. and I used the same old 50s style can opener for most of my childhood... lol

My wife and I still use the Swing-a-way can openers we got for wedding gifts...over 35 years ago. They still work right (almost) every time. They're getting old and loose...kind of like me, but USUALLY, when they don't open the can right...it's the way the can was seamed, not the can opener.

2 pieces of advice:

1. Get a swing-a-way manual can opener

2. If you can't handle opening a can, don't even try to slice a bagel in half, you'd probably lose a finger or two.

There's a technique, OP. A technique that every 8-year-old who has used a can opener 3 times should know.

-After each turn, back it up ever so slightly before you reposition your hand for another turn.
-Make sure you're applying enough force to keep the blade vertical or pointed in toward the wall of the can (duh).
-When you are almost completely around and the lid is only barely held on, the lid starts to twist on the axis of the tiny point that still holds it. Put something under it (finger or utensil) so it doesn't fall in.
-Then finish the last tiny bit.

Always comes out clean for me.

Sounds like you're the guy they made the Safe-T-Can for. Just go ahead and get that kind. It cuts the lid from the side, so you can place it back on the can and put remaining contents in the fridge. While the lid isn't sharp, I assume the top of the can would be EXTREMELY sharp.

My can opener looks like #1. And most of my bagels come pre-sliced. 😛

Dude, the $3 can opener I picked up at the drug store has worked perfectly for a year. Get a better can opener or learn how to use one.
