All these issues with the shutter lag - if you're used to SLR cameras, they work roughly the same way.

You have to half depress the button, then full depress to click. Make a habit of always pre-focussing first, then full depress when you're ready.

That being the case, you should have have no problems saying 1-2-3 then clicking. The lag after focus is unbelievably quick. Quicker than some other cameras I've had.

Anyway, just a tip. Once you get used to it, it's ok.

I'm very new in the digital camera department and the only "higher-end" digital camera I've ever seen and used was a friends nikon 990. This camera has taken some of the most beautiful screens to ever grace my monitor, but it has also taken that didn't come out right...etc and well...looked pretty ugly.

I like the size of the 3Mpxl shots as they print out at amazingly high quality. So my question is this: How would the s330 compare to the 990? Since I'm a beginner I don't plan on adjusting too many meters and settings off the bat. I will use the camera for everything from showing off a videocard cooling setup, to taking night pictures (if possible) -like landscape, etc friends around university campus at all hours of the day, a girlfriend/group of friends, technology conventions, a trip to England, and a picture or two of my cat.

So would you say the "Beautiful" pictures I've taken with the nikon (setting was to automatic) would he norm of image quality I'd get with the s330? I want a camera I can open, point, shoot, print and have friends/family oogle over the picture quality when in fact I really don't know much what I am doing...yet :)

Thanks

Just figured out why S200's Macro mode is worse than S110. It is not the problem of the lens. It is due to S200 takes a little bit longer time to foucs. you have to hold it still to get a better close-up shot. Try a tripod, you will see the difference.

This is taken about 1 feet to 1.5feet away from the mail I got. I think the font size of the mail is size 8 or smaller. This is done using 1600x1200 at superfine. Macro was not used though.

Hey I like that watch in the photo !!! What is the make?

rpr, glad it's not only me. I've used an SLR for begining classes, and this kind of delay is no where near the same (but i have not used any newer SLR's.. we only used full manual). But it's only happened a few times out of 100 or so.

As for the macro mode, I'm pretty happy with it. I mean, i can't do any 1" close-ups, but that's not what I was expecting from this.

here are a couple of macro and night shot examples. All used a tripod (it was a bit dark where the flowers were, altho, the last one i fired the flash).

forgot to say... the originals are there... after you click on the thumb, change the file extention from .htm to .jpg... and capitalize "img." It's on a linux system and is case sensitive. I have yet to play w/ the software that made those pages.. so i haven't tried to do custom scripts for it.

one more note, on my screen, i see "lines" on the flower.. the run horizontally.. i dunno if that's my monitor or what.. but on a 4x6 printout from walmart.. they are not present. And this is a plug for walmart... they actually did a great job w/ the printouts.. and if you live near one w/ a print center.. you can get them done in an hour (altho.. if the guy isn't there.. you'll have to pick em up next day). .26/ea 4x6.

I also got the spare battery from batterybarn.. we'll see how it works out.

Personally, I am still not completely sold on the S330/S200 being an "upgrade" to my Nikon 775. So, I've taken it up on myself to continue to use it in real world situations and research on the internet. I'm going to start posting some of the opinions/experiences that I've found across the internet...

Enjoy!

Well, I don't own the S330, but I almost bought it. I went for the S200 (IXUS V2) instead. My main reason to order the S200 was that I wanted an ultra-portable camera that I'll be able to bring with me wherever I go. I have read that the S330 is small, but quite heavy, and some users said that it's not really that "pocketable" compared to the much lighter and slightly smaller S200. The S330 has a better zoom (35-105mm equivalent), which I find very valuable. Also, I like the case of the S330 better, it seems very solid and I like the little wheel to set the shooting mode. If you don't mind the slightly larger size, by all means go for the S330. However, I have heard of several problems with the S330, namely rattling inside the case, cromatic aberrations (CA) and some people reported dead pixels on their LCD.

I have the S100 and S200.. the S100 does feel better.. and look better I
think. It's just more solid. That being said, the S200 is not slouch.. I've
been using it now for about a week, and find it's a nice camera, and takes
good pictures. The additional features of the S200 make it my choice.. for
less money.. now, do I sell my S100 or not? I'm not sure.

I just picked up the S200 from Fry's in Fremont (San Jose CA). They have 3 more in stock, as I assume the other local stores have stock also. I bought the S330 a few weeks back, but it was larger than the S100 I have now, and the S200 was the same size with very similar features to the S330, so I opted to wait and get the S200. So, how is the S200? The S100 is hard to beat.. I think the S100 is built better, nicer metal housing in my opinion. What I want is the filters and the longer shutter speeds. I won't use the video much, but I did try it and it was "OK". Shooting in 160 mode, I could take 30 sec of video. In the 320 mode it was 9-10 sec (as I recall) and I did not try the 640 mode. I still think the camera saturates the reds A LOT. Since I had the 330 for a few days, the learning curve on this 200 was very fast for me. > I think the S200 will make a great, useable first camera. It's small enough to take where ever you go, it's light, so you will not know it's with you. You WILL take lots of pictures with it. > I'll have trouble justifying the difference between my S100 and the S200. I only shoot pictures, not movies. > I'll shoot several more pictures before I make my final decision, to keep my S100 or upgrade.

"Good camera for the price"
My experience so far as been great. I've had the chance to take quite a few pictures with this camera and most of them came out good. There are quite a few options that one can set manually. I do not understand all of them yet, but I don't doubt that I'll be using them in the near future as soon as I figure out what they do :). And the battery life has been good. I think I was able to use it for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Most of the pictures used the flash and I had the display on for all of them as well. This is my first digital camera so I have nothing to compare it to, but it's treated me well so far. I would definately recommend it to a first time digital camera buyer.

OK, everyone! I got my S200 in. For those of you who didn't read my post about this..... I bought a S330 but then called Dell to have them switch it to a S200. I had been waiting 2 weeks for the S330 to come in, so I figured I was safe. Dell said no problem and claimed to have cancelled my S330 order. Well... they didn't. So, rather than call Dell and complain, I'm just going to take a look at both cameras and pick the one that fits me best.

The S200 is small! The reviews weren't lying. It seems a good amount smaller than the S330. The pocketibility level is much higher on the S200. I have been walking around with the S330 in my pocket for 3 days now, and it never really bothered me. I put it in a suglass bag that I have from my SPY Optic sunglasses. This cloth bag is perfect! The bag doesn't add any extra bulk to the camera while keeping my pocket lent and whatever else may be in my pocket out of the camera.

I must say that I like the S330's wheel setup better than the S200 switch. The switch just feels cheap. I miss the S330's easy switch to Manual. With the S200, you actually have to press the Menu button and then use the 4-way cursor buttons to pick Manual. Is this a big deal? Probably not in real world situations. I haven't had the chance to carry around the S200. I'll be carrying it around for a couple days and I'll report back on this subject.

More Initial Reactions on the S200
- I love the 'smallness' of the S200! This seem more along the size that I have been looking for!
- It seems very well put together
- Picture quality on par with S330.
- Zoom wheel is easy to use. I find it odd that the controls are so different between the S200 and S330.
- I miss the speaker from the S330. The S200 doesn't give that satisfying 'shutter' sound that the S330 does. I'm a geek and this along with the My Camera options may swing me towards the S330.
- Video is... well... a digital camera's attempt at video. I have a Sony TRV17 MiniDV to take care of video. In my 10 months of using digital cameras, I have never found THE opportunity for video. They are always forced opportunities that end up looking like crap!
- Two things that would make the S200 better in everyway that I care (1)speaker (2)give me the same dial control on top as the S330!
- The 2x optical seem fine for now. Although, I was only shooting indoors. We'll see how 2x works for me in outdoor environments. I'm not a huge zoom fan, but sometimes they help you 'frame' your shot better when you can't actually move to frame it better. Plus, when I pull up to take a shot, it's always easier to zoom to where I want than try moving. FYI, I'm used to the 3x zoom of my Nikon 775 and now the 3x of the S330 that I've used for the past 3 days. Let's see how important that 1x zoom is.

I'll report back after using the S200 for a couple of days.

Some more macro shots from Kale S. Irish

http://www.pbase.com/irishkale/s200macro1

Using a steady surface for the camera, camera directly connect to PC, using the software to snap the photos.

Wow! Check out the quality of the macro shots! To bad it wasn't easier to get these without a tripod (or similar setup)

Stoked! The first charge should only take 10-30 minutes. Each charge after takes about 2.5 hours.

Have fun!

EDIT :: My first charge was short. I think it came with a pretty decent charge. Since I have both the S330 and S200, I did a test. With the S330, I just threw the battery in and started using. It gave me about 20-30 pictures with flash/lcd. With the S200, I charged the battery right off. It took 30 minutes.
