UBS all the way. the advantages are great, the pay will only go up, and people who work for such a reputable company are usually envied by the rest


cchen: i worked in IT, then i worked in the legal fiend (private investigator), and now i'm back in IT (although before i landed myself this job, i looked in many different areas). people actually do make career changes.

What I mean is working on the IT helpdesk, you're not gonna jump to being a banker.

unless it becomes an interesting enough topic that an individual would actually want to pursue by exposing himself/herself to that aspect of the job (through negotiations or at-home study). the likelihood though, however, is probably minimal.

Is this the UBS office in Stamford, CT, or in NYC? Not that it really matters, I guess... The traffic is going to be hell either way. I'd take the job, but MOVE CLOSER as soon as I could. And see if you can get a relo package for starting with them.

if OP lives on LI and commutes to park ave, or ave of the americas, just take the LIRR, its quick and painless...

if OP lives on LI and needs to commute to stamford, move either to nyc, or stamford (the rents are the same)

OR

if OP lives near port jefferson, OP can take the ferry from port jeff to bridgeport and take the MetroNorth to Stamford.

I've been working for a very large financial services company in IT here in Manhattan for 4 years now. I don't get 20% bonuses (best was 9%) nor am I now a financial wizard.

i think your entry from IT into finance would be a motivational issue. you can't -- err, won't -- become an expert unless you want to learn about finances, which may include asking your superiors about specifics in order to show that you have interest and then doing your own personal research.

do you live in CT and commute to manhattan, btw? you take the MNR?

I'd say UBS and try to move closer. And if you own the place you're at right now (unlikely) then rent it out and have a residual income each month.

Canon. 90 min. each way - that is 3 hrs wasted on traffice. And if you work 8-9 hrs per day, that is about 11-12 hrs you put into work. You work to live or live to work? If you wants to learn more about finance, use the extra time you save to learn it. BTW, what is so great about finance anyway.

50k for some basic support? sounds overpaid depending on loc

ever work in hedgefund ? especially supporting traders ? i think you been ripped.. but if its your first job, its not bad... traders are the worse to deal with... but UBS are great, I believe UBS has over 1200 developers, a lot of propriety software.. start learning bloomberg, reuters, trading apps, etc.. and good luck

UBS in stamford ct has the WORLD largest trading floor, state of the art.. and mortons steak house right below it.. how many trading floor has a retractable roof ?

if you're in LI, which ubs are you going to, city or CT ?

btw my bonus last year was 120k...

most trader get bonus minimum 250k, i seen 500k and some from 1-2 million. This was not management positions..

If you are 15 minutes away from Canon in Lake Success, and 90 minutes away from NYC, that puts you at about the Syosset/Woodbury area at the furthest.

I've commuted from there to NYC before via LIRR. It's not that bad.

I would go with UBS. Canon is a computerish company and the way things are going chances are they may downsize or out source before a bank would no?

3 hours a day of commuting is not worth working at UBS IMO. Quality of life is a factor that too many Americans pretend doesn't exist!

Just curious, how far does 50k go in NY?

not too far...since 50k puts u in a higher tax bracket, ur lookin to come away with ~1200 biweekly after taxes and 401k n stuff.....at 2400 a month...u COULD be self sufficient i suppose (rent, car, car insurance, etc.) but as far as savings go u wouldnt figure to build up much.
