Canon or UBS?

Hey

So heres the deal, I just got 2 job offers, 1 from Canon (located 15 minutes driving from my house) and the other from UBS Investment bank, which would come out to a 90 minute commute each way into and out of the city. The canon postion is a phoen support position where id be supporting business dealers on pre-sales applications n hardware. The UBS position is sorta like tech support (helpdesk and desktop) for investment bankers and hedge fund traders. What the heck should I do? both are similar in pay (50k). Canon is closer, but ppl also tell me that the financial experience i get from UBS will far outweigh what canon can offer in 5 years. plus i heard canon is not loyal to employees. sorry this was long, but i dunno wat to do, so wanted to give every detail i could. thanks for the help.

ubs

you'll get good bonuses, they'll pay for education and they have in-house financial classes. it's also a good portal for other more lucrative jobs in the bank.

Where do you live? What city are you commuting into

50k for some basic support? sounds overpaid depending on loc 😛

I would agree with that. You're more likley to learn things that are useful later in life at UBS. At Canon, all you will learn is technical details about their products, whcih is only useful if you stay with Canon.

Canon is in equipment manufacturing, which is always under market pressure for cost, so there will always be "restructuring", which will impact staffing. Financial service don't operate the same way.

my recruiter said ubs pays out 15-20% bonuses. Is he telling the truth or jus telling me what i want to hear so he gets his headhunter fee? 15-20 sounds a bit much for any job......thanks for the reoplies by the way

I can believe it. I work for a large financial company and my bonus's are minimum 22-26% each year.

I live in Long Island, NY......i thought 50k was alot too, but its not like cable modem support dealing with pc illiterates....id be dealing with business dealers who already have in depth knowledge of the products, n they would be implementing the canon stuff on an enterprise level

and to the above poster, if you're in IT, you'll be staying in IT.

With a mindset like that, you will. It all depends on how well you build your skill set while you are employed with the company. Help desk can give him the foot in the door he needs to move around once he's in.

IT dept of i-banks do not get the same types of generous bonuses as the actual finance depts (to which 15-20% is laughably small)

UBS its a no brainer from the comments in this thread... and the commute is hardly as bad just make sure you bring loads of music for the ride hehe

If you're doing IT work for UBS, how exactly are you going to be getting experience in the financial market? You might pick up a few things while there but your focus is going to be technology not finances.

UBS? never heard of it, but the 90 min commute reaaaaaaally turns me off to that.

are you serious? never heard of it? have you ever stepped outside albany?

UBS all the way. the advantages are great, the pay will only go up, and people who work for such a reputable company are usually envied by the rest 😛

cchen: i worked in IT, then i worked in the legal fiend (private investigator), and now i'm back in IT (although before i landed myself this job, i looked in many different areas). people actually do make career changes.

UBS. You'll get to do real IT projects if you stick at it long enough.

<-- works for the company that supplies system monitoring software for UBS

No.... I'm serious. I have not known one full-time IT guy who moved to the finance side. Also, especially because he is on the helpdesk.

What I mean is working on the IT helpdesk, you're not gonna jump to being a banker.
