Yeah, both of them are good cameras... So is the Pentax *ist DS, for that matter.

Here is a shot of my Digital Rebel and the exact same Sigma lens

The thing about the Sigma is that it is a Sigma and has a tendency to die early. Look at the many posts on the Internet regarding them.

I was.
Did you ever weigh in on the debate on CCD vs. Cmos?

You mean in general, or was there a thread somewhere debating the merits of CCD vs. CMOS?
At the present I think in-camera processing routines are more important. I haven't done a whole lot of research on the technologies themselves, but I don't think either one is necessarily "better" than the other. They'll both be replaced by something else eventually anyway.

Check out this. Very interesting comparison of image quality between the Rebel and Panasonic FZ-20, a prosumer all-in-one camera.

And picture comparisons

If these pics show anything about the Rebel, it's that the Panasonic FZ-20 blows it away. Kinda disturbing...

both will take nice pics, if you dont have any canon lenses now, I'd suggest the D70. Why? because the E300D's silver toy like body, people will think and know that you are just an amateur with a nice camera. The D70 will make you look like a pro, and real pros will give you respect for having such camera.
/me puts on flame proof suit. 😉

To be honest, i felt both cameras at BB tonight and i liked the feel of the Nikon better. Although the Canon was nice, it just felt "cheaper".

Both cameras are nice but the color of the 300D makes the body looks super cheap.
The D20 beats all though.

on a few of those pictures-- it just looks like the focus is off on the canon. my untrained eyes think the canon is capable of much better pictures than thsoe he took.

Do you have any of either brand's glass? That would be the deciding factor.
If not, it's a toss up.

Nope, first DSLR.
My brother has a canon non-digital and loves it, but he lives too far away for us to swap lenses from time to time.

Did you try the buttons and dials on both cameras? Personally I like the setup on the Canon better. The menu system seems better on the Canon. The buttons were also easier to find and use. IMO.
