Yeah, both of them are good cameras... So is the Pentax *ist DS, for that matter.

The thing about the Sigma is that it is a Sigma and has a tendency to die early. Look at the many posts on the Internet regarding them.

You mean in general, or was there a thread somewhere debating the merits of CCD vs. CMOS?
At the present I think in-camera processing routines are more important. I haven't done a whole lot of research on the technologies themselves, but I don't think either one is necessarily "better" than the other. They'll both be replaced by something else eventually anyway.
That's a HORRIBLE comparison.
1. He's using a low quality lens on the Canon.
2. Using the worst setting for the cheap lens. f5.6 😛 Let him try at f8 or something
3. Point&shoot cameras auto sharpen everything for you. Canon doesn't
4. From some of his pictures, he doesn't know how to use the camera that well. In the last comparison examples, his exposures are totally different.
5. He doesn't show settings for any of his pictures.
6. If he believes that the FZ-20 is really better than the Canon (or any SLR) he should just sell the SLR.

both will take nice pics, if you dont have any canon lenses now, I'd suggest the D70. Why? because the E300D's silver toy like body, people will think and know that you are just an amateur with a nice camera. The D70 will make you look like a pro, and real pros will give you respect for having such camera.

the REAL pros SHOULD know that the 300D and D70 are similar cameras. They should be able to know exactly what camera you have just by looking at it, dispite what color or how many scratches it has. Just imageine an L lens on the 300D... 🙂 or whatever the Nikon equiv lens is on the D70.

Do you have any of either brand's glass? That would be the deciding factor.

There's an all black version of the Canon Digital Rebel now so if you're really that concerned about color that should solve your problem.

In comparing the two cameras with their respective kit lenses, the D70 is definitely a lot better. The lens they include with the kit (18-70mm) is much higher quality than the plastic EF-S lens included with the Rebel. The D70 is also in general a faster camera than the Rebel and it has a better flash and metering system. The Rebel has the advantage of having a less noisy CMOS sensor though so its generally speaking better for taking pictures in low light. The D70 also seems to suffer from moire problems but many have said the lens is more likely the culprit than the camera itself. Overall, the D70 is the winner here.
That said, you're buying into a lens system more than buying a camera. In a year or two both cameras will be heavily outdated and will be replaced with new better cameras.. Your lenses will still work though, so when you're ready to upgrade going with the same company is the logical choice. A lot of people have already said the Canon 20D is a superior camera to both the D70 and Rebel which imho is true (I owned a Rebel, and now own a 20D). I don't know what Nikon has up their sleeves but right now there's not really a true upgrade path past the D70 unless you go for the D2X which is a full professional grade camera. Canon has the Rebel -> 20D -> 1Ds Mk II ... So if you feel that you've outgrown the Rebel, you can still ugprade to a Consumer level camera. Canon lenses also tend to have better technology than the Nikon lenses. Most Canon lenses use a USM (ultra sonic motor) for focusing which speeds up autofocus time a significant amount ... And many Canon "L" grade professional lenses use their Image Stabilizer system which allows you to hand hold shots for up to 3 stops longer. Nikon has equivalent technologies for both, they just don't have it in as many of their lenses.
Just my 2 cents, good luck with your decision! Either camera is a great choice.
Oh and for the link comparing the Lumix to the Rebel ... Canon SLRs usually don't post-process their images too much ... On the Rebel they do more post-processing than on the 20D, but Canon generally tries to leave their images untouched to allow you to touch up the images yourself in Photoshop or whatever. Using some simple Adobe Actions that you can download, you can make a picture taken with the Rebel look as pretty as the pictures taken with the Lumix ... the whole idea is to allow you to edit the photos however you like, so if you're looking for more neutral tones you can leave the picture alone but if you're looking for a more Point and Shoot look, you can edit the pictures to make them look that way.
BTW- You can read up and find a lot of info on both cameras in the dpreview.com forums.
