This lens has been pointed out to me - http://www.fredmiranda.com/rev...t=102&sort=7&thecat=29
It's a Sigma 70-200 F2.8 and I can get it for around $650
Everything I've read and heard about it is nothing but positive. Looks like it would be a great mid-distance lens and with a teleconverter and the cropping of the 300d an excellent ultra-zoom.
I'm also looking at this Tamron 28-75 f2.8 for a shorter range -

This one goes for around $350.
Those two lenses would give me some very good distances for just a little over $1,000.
Seem like some good choices for the $$?
I've tried the Tamron 28-75f2.8 a few months back. It is a very nice lens. Built like a tank and heavy like one too. This is one of those lenses that I wished I had a 10D or 20D to balance out the weight. There's also a pull/push you need to be able to zoom or manual focus (forgot which), but I'm sure you figured that one out (unless I'm totally mistaken).
I read the reviews for the Sigma 70-200f2.8, there seems to a mix of opinions on it's focus speed and quality at f2.8. The Canon 70-200f4L is sharp at f4. Here's a sample pic at f4 w/ flash. Straight from camera. pic
