Be gentle this is my second post ...... I have been looking for a couple weeks and the best delivered price I could find from a reputable dealer was in the $220 range. OM has the Canon A40 back in stock online for $249.98. Add in some paper clips and use one of the couple $50 coupons that are out there. I know this is not as good as the deal that from 10/27 but it is still not bad for a good camera. I wanted to post to the 10/27 thread but being rookie at this I couldn't figure out how to reply to that thread. I ordered mine this morning and received a notice that the status is opn, with the delivery date set for tomorrow.

If it comes back into stock, then the case in this thread for $4.95 plus free shipping is a good deal.

I got one and it's the correct Canon case for the A40, A20 and A10 PowerShot cameras. A very nice case!

RossMAN- I think you're the expert in this area--
which do you think is better A40 or the S200 for roughly the same price (over a 5 yr holding period for the camera $50 is more or less the same I figure- pay once and get a good one is my motto) or pay $120 moreand get the S230 with DIGIC and 9 point AF?

we want one that will won't be obsolete for a few years (like up to 5?)
we're beginners but want quality. we'll probably keep it forever.

TIA!

nolamerz - Since I'm a photography newbie I'm not the best person to ask, sorry.

Farbio - That's a nice deal but whenever I go on vacations I snap A LOT of pics and prefer the storage a 128MB or 256MB CF offers ... but dayum $18 is HOT!

i don't understand why you all add paperclips. personally, i use like one paperclip a year. you're better off getting kleenex. everybody uses kleenex.

I stand corrected, that digicam BLOWS AWAY the Canon A40.

WTF was I thinking?

OPINION WANTED!! (I know I am probably in the wrong place for anyone to share their opinions, but please humor me)

I am looking at a Digital Camera, and have narrowed it down to the Canon A40 (2MegPx) for $200 after coupon, or to the Olympus D-550 (3MegPx) for $300 (Office Depot after coupon, + free 64mb Memory card).

Please chime in to what you think is better.

The OD one is $270 after coupon, not $300.

Basically, you are paying $70 extra for a 64mb memory card, and an extra megapixel. Take off $30 (the value of the memory) and you are paying an extra $40 for 3 megapixels vs. 2 megapixels. I'd say the extra $40, and consequently, the extra $70, is worth is for a 3MP camera. I'd be very happy with the A40, but since I already have a 2MP camrea I'm upgrading from, getting the A40 wouldn't be that big of an upgrade (however it would be an upgrade in image quality over my Kodak), and I'd probably want a 3MP down the line anyway, just making me upgrade AGAIN. But 3MP on the other hand, is quite a nice upgrade and some reports are that once you get to 3MP, it's hard to tell the difference in quality if you go higher(i.e. 4MP, 5MP), especially for 8x10 prints and smaller.

If you are just going to be using pics for the web, the A40 will be MORE THAN adequate. If you are going to print out 8x10s and you just want better overall image quality for all your pics, go with the Olympus.

ThumpR777--

Neither. I would get the Canon S230 for about $325-330 from Dell/ebates when they have their next promo.

Care to elaborate?

The A40 and the 550-Z are both excellent cameras and recieve great reviews. Both are also considered excellent values. You can always pay more for better anything. Also, I think alot of people want to have the camera around for this thanksgiving/the holidays and don't want to wait on a dell promo.

I would get the Canon PowerShot A40, overall better value. Plus it records video with audio, uses CompactFlash instead of SmartMedia is an all around awesome package.

Dell seems to have the S230 for about $330 every few days, the last time being Friday. I would rather wait a couple of days or weeks and have a really nice camera for years, than have something today, that is inferior. Everyone has to judge what works best for themselves, but that's what I would do. The S230 has a new DIGIC internal processor and 9 point autofocus, which is what's swaying me. Yes, there's also better things at higher prices, but if one is considering these 2 models, then one should consider the S230 in the same analysis; I mean it's not like I told him to go buy some $2000 camera. ;)

Hey Rossman. What are the advantages of CF? I was about to head out and get the Olympus, the way I look at it, $40 is worth it for an extra megapixel.

I think the A40 deal from 10/27 (CF card included) was the best deal all around. But here I can get a barebones A40, or a 550 with 64mb and a camera bag for $50 more (I'm pretty sure my OD will let me use the OM coupon).
