I do hope this camera sells as well as Canon hopes, because the more units it moves, the more cost effective it will be to produce full size sensors. This is also why I will never buy an EF-S lens. Someday I will want to replace my 20D, but not soon. It has the resolution, flexibility and low noise I want in a camera. I love shooting in RAW, and I can do that nicely, thank you.

I have a 20D too but I have both the 17-85IS and the 10-22 ef-s lenses. IMO, you are missing out on a lot by not taking advantage of your cameras ability to mount those lenses. Canon seems to be taking a 1.6x=consumer and FF=professional approach. FF is not coming down to the sub 1K price-point any time too soon. EF-S lenses will hold their value well enough. If I wanted to purchase the 5D when it became available, I could easily sell my ef-s lenses for nearly what I paid for them. This should continue to be the case in the foreseeable future.

I had the 28-135IS w/ my 10D and sold it for the 17-85IS when I upgraded to a 20D. The 17-85IS is a much better walk-around lens while the 10-22 provides real ultra-wa shooting on a 1.6x crop body. I'd seriously reconsider not buying ef-s lenses considering it is one of the advantages of your camera body.

..although the 24-105L IS does seem pretty, depending on the price.

Of all the lenses, the 10-22 is the most appealing, but I went with the 17-40L. If in the future I need a superwide, I will probably go with a Russian fisheye. Not rectilinear, but still fun I think.

The major advantage I see for this camera isnt the sexy MP count, but the potential for lower noise. Even that isn't enough to sway me, because I shot some interior pics with the 20D at ISO 3200 and processed through Neat Image. They came out quite clean. So what would really be an advantage for me? the ability to go out in bad weather, where a lot of great pics can be taken without worrying about the camera. That is distinctly lacking here.

Am glad I opted to wait for a VGA Pocket PC phone over the X50v, which should be hitting the consumer market soon enough.

I bought the D70 last year and regret it. Canon seems to have all the new stuffs. They even released a 2nd gen 75-300 IS lens while Nikon still hasn't released one other than the uber expensive 70-200 VR (>$1500)

nikon always has and most likely always will have 2 lines of cameras and lenses, consumer and pro, IMO i see nothing wrong with that

canon OTOH IMO makes way to much stuff

ill be sticking with my D70 as well, hell even if the rumored 12mp D200 comes out ill still stick with it because it currently does everything i need, there are currently no shortcummings with the camera

wow, full frame and 16.6 megapixels!

haha but it costs about the same as a car

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd pay for something that's the price of a car, if it could easily be thrown out the car window.

Hell...even laptops aren't that expensive.

They finally decided to put a spot meter in one of these things. That's the one thing I wish my 20D had.

That new EF 24-105mm F/4.0IS looks really nice. I may have to ebay off my EF-S 17-85mm for that lens.

Same here. The thing about the 5D though is it only has a 3 fps max shooting speed. Not too useful for shooting sports.

I just did that. 🙂 Hopefully I get the 24-105 L within a month.

(P.S. If anyone is interested in my 17-85, pm me.)

You know it's going to cost more than the 24-70mm f/2.8? I can see why people want it because of the IS, but charging that much is crazy talk.

Actually, in Canada the price of the 24-105 is similar or cheaper than the 24-70.

And I have much more interest in the 24-105 f/4L IS than I do the 24-70 f/2.8. The 24-70 is significantly heavier, and a bit short on the long end for my tastes. In fact, I specifically chose the 17-85 originally for these reasons. I didn't want to spend that kind of coin on a heavy lens that was too short on the tele end.

FWIW, Chuck Westfall claims the 24-105L will be as good or possibly better than the 24-70 (if you can ignore the lack of f/2.8).

The samples do look very good.

Not to mention the lenses. You don't buy this camera and slap a $100 kit zoom lens on it...unless you're an idiot of course.

The newly introduced Canon EF 25-105 F4L lens is MSRPing for $1249.00. That's about as cheap as they get for "L" zoom lenses, excluding the 17-40 F4L.

Actually, the 70-200 f/4L is around $600. I own that lens and the 17-40 f/4L.

Who wants that lens when you can buy a 70-200 2.8L IS for $1100 more? 😀

Heh. My next lens purchase after this is a 50 mm f/1.8, and that costs less than a 100 bux. 😛

It's just going to be used for available light photos when needed.

Yeah, I have that lens too. Awesome lens for the price, and a lot lighter than the other 70-200L lenses. (I'm a bit weight averse for lenses.)

Yes, the weight of the 70-200 disturbs me too. So where does one get a light and sharp telephoto? Maybe the EF 200 F2.8L prime?

Its a shame that the 24-105mm is going to cost $1250. Even if I sell off my 17-85mm, I still need to scrounge up another $700-$800.

I'm just not too thrilled with the 17-85mm. The variable aperature on it really stinks and the bokeh is non-existant.
