Cancelling cable TV in a couple of weeks

I canceled my cable last week. I was paying about the same to Comcast (about $130/mo, HD cable but no phone service) and I was sick of their crappy service. I've got a Qwest DSL line now and I'm using a local ISP that I'm quite happy with. As for TV, I've got a cabinet full of DVDs and with the money I'm saving on cable I could buy the boxed sets of any shows I like to watch and see them any time I want.

i wish we could pay for individual channels we want. On broadcast TV i watch only CW (formerly WB) and FOX only. On cable though i watch TBS, TNT, USA, Spike, Sci-Fi, and Cartoon Network on a daily basis. My sis almost never watches TV and my mom hardly watches cable. If i could pay for just those channels we would save money but until then we are stuck

we dumped the cable but of course..kept internet.. because comcast lied to us about their pricing and when we called them on it they said they never offered such a deal...almost everyone i know where i live has a comcast tried to rip me off story its pretty sad

I don't know how to get off cable, since they are also my ISP. I have at least 756 down, HBO & Starz.
I pay $106 per month.

I haven't had cable tv in over a year. I don't watch enough shows. Heroes and Studio 60 are really the only things I watch, and both are available on NBC.com. I pay $40 a month for cable internet, and that's it. Plus about $15 for water and $40 for electricity. I'm quite the conservationist.

thats what i do too. i do have a tv but use a amplified antenna (indoor)

With cable internet, you can always get 3rd party VOIP from Vonage or AT&T Callvantage for $24.99 a month.

Get the free phone router/adapter with the service as well

for phone you could also try skype. it cost $3 a month for skype in and 30 for unlimited calling in the US and canada for a year (it was 15 when i got it) so that much much cheaper than a regualr phone.

imho, skype is ass.

i'd rather just use vonage or something.

dont have cable tv for 1 1/2 years as I refuse to pay the outrageous charges..cant install a satelitte dish as I am in a townhouse complex even though I can get it for free wink wink have to wait until I get a house

Been without cable/satellite/etc for the last 7 years or so...there are so many better better things to do. However I do spend an hour more or less on the intarweb randomly surfing a few times a week......

Every place I've lived with Comcast, I've found that if the previous renters/owners has had comcast service before, and you sign up for their basic $15/mo service, all the normal $40 channels will still spill over because they don't really maintain their filters.

The TV service then pays for itself when you sign up for internet service because TV customers get $10 or $15/mo discount (I can't remember which) from cable-only service. The advantage of doing this, instead of internet-only + antennae is, if you have and watch HDTV, you'll get QAM digital channels. Of course YMMV, but it's worked for me everytime.

Where can I find the rates for the most basic cable services offered? Time Warner Cable (Albany, NY in my case) only show the high priced digital cable services on their website... any ideas?

I will be cancelling at end of the month too.

They charge $150 for internet and $100 for cable with sports (no HBO etc).

It used to be Charter but Charter sold to an Investor group called Allegiance.TV

There is no other choice here so the rich will continue to pay the raping charges while us peons go back to the 20th Century.

It's all by design.

We did the same thing for the phone service. We dropped our cable to the lowest basic we could. Living in a valley in the mountains, antennas don't work here, otherwise we'd have dropped it too.

As for internet, I'm about to drop cable and get DSL. Even though cable has "higher" maximum speeds, I'm tired of downloading at 150KBps on a 6Mbps connection cause half the people sharing my connection are downloading the internet with bittorrent. I'd prefer the dedicated line at almost the same speed, plus it's cheaper. Save yourself a little more money and get DSL. Here at least, cable modem is $45 (6Mbps) and DSL is $30 (5Mbps).

Shut up. Just shut the fck up, moron. Nobody wants to hear your loony sht anymore.

It is sort of ironic, Our rents here are extremely high but our electric and cable bills are low.

Our electric bill is always under $40 even in the summer.

We use Cox cable and for internet + HD-DVR + 3 movie channels, Full HD TV lineup and landline not voip telephone our bill is $100. Much cheaper than when I was with comcast.

We've thought about it as well. THe normal Network shows are available online so that's not a big deal. Only thing would be the HGTV, Discovery, etc shows that I like. I pay $35/mo for internet and like $50 for cable which is their cheapest package available.

However, go check out the articles on Joost. Free TV over the Internet. Can't wait for that to take off.

wtf cox is charging me 121ish a month for digital cable, cable internet, and basic phone.

I have a few upgraded tiers of channels, but no movie channels/hd-dvr =\

i'm getting rid of cable and going with DSL (which is faster). comcast is going to be taking over houston at some point this year which doesn't sound positive.

I downgraded my Comcast service to basic cable ($8/mo) just to keep the cable internet service at the cheaper rate which ends up being cheaper overall. I had HD service but didnt watch enough to justify the cost.

My wife and I had limited cable ($9 / month) for a long time (many years) because we just didn't watch any TV. Now that our oldest child is 4.5 years we have re-subscribed to get the kid's shows.
