Had this happen to me a few years back.. make sure when you send in the stuff that you keep your tracking numbers... things "get lost" with them all the time.

I love reading Dish network cancellation stories. People usually always get screwed.

I hope you dont get screwed Waggy, but it would be funny anyway.

What? I think you're confused, who do you hate? Are you sure you hate dish, and not direct tv?

I've had dish for 3 years, never screwed up billing once, they have better hardware too, imo..and sling on their new DVR's.

Tell them you can't access the sat on the roof and they won't require you to return the LNB. Then you can sell it on ebay.

Or so I've heard.

Yeah, if you tell them there's no way you could get to where the dish is to get the LNB you should be fine. Tell them they're welcome to come out and get it (they won't).

As others have said, write down the UPS tracking # from the label on the box they send you. Even the guy at the UPS store told me they're notorious for claiming things never got delivered to them. It probably doesn't happen THAT often, but often enough that it's worth writing down the tracking # to avoid being in that category.

Also, as others have said, Dish > DirecTV as far as the product itself is concerned. I too had a number of billing issues with them though so am no longer a customer either.

You can also mod them for awesome Wifi antennas :)

I have Dish and love it. $30 for the full HD package.
I will never switch to Directv because i simply refuse to sign any contract with a end of termination fee. Dish allows me to pay month to month.

we had a lot of issues with them last summer. i was going to cancel then but they offered us like 3 months free if we stayed. we aren't on a contract so i don't see them screwing us.

I just cancelled my Dish service yesterday because their DVR boxes kept freezing and rebooting all the time. I had several boxes replaced, but to get a newer box they wanted me to sign another 2 year contract.

They never offered anything when I called about what my ETF would be if I cancelled and what I had to return, but when I actually cancelled, they offered several things for me to stay. I politely declined.

Prior to cancelling, they told me they send out UPS boxes to return the receivers, and I did not have to return the dish. When I cancelled I was told I have to send back a part off of the dish, and if I use any of the labels they send with the boxes, I will be charged $15.00 per. Bastards.

Now I just have to deal with cable service until I move. I will look into Directv then.

i thought i paid for my receivers as well and i had to send mine back when i switched from dish to direct along with the thing on the dish that points at the dish.

i really like direct better, the biggest thing is being able to record a show and watch something else at the same time. the only thing i liked about dish is that there was some logic to their channel numbers. with direct channels seem to be all over the place and i still havent learned them yet.

I was thinking that once my DirecTV contract expired that I would put up an antenna for local channels and stream video for anything else. Is Hulu, netflix, and other internet based programming good enough quality to watch on your 1080p TV?

Only you would know for sure if you own the receivers. I would think you'd remember if you actually bought them. Few people buy their own as it makes little sense. The technology changes too quickly. It's far cheaper to just lease the boxes from them. If the installer brought them to the house, the boxes belong to Dish.

Tell them the dish itself is on the roof and you don't feel comfortable climbing up there and they will back off instantly on that request. They don't want to get sued when you fall of the roof. They are not interested in the dish itself, only the LNBF's which are the horn type things at the end of the arm. BTW, they have no idea whatsoever where your dish is actually mounted.

It's their equipment. It's not unreasonable for them to demand it back. The best advice you've gotten so far is to keep the tracking numbers. Dish is legendary for saying they did not receive returned equipment.

Edit: Eh, didn't read every post. Looks like everything I said had already been covered.

well when i started with Dish network like 6 yrs ago i paid $$ for each reciever upfront. Also i remember the page said PURCHASE of equipment on the bill. wish i had thought ahead and printed it out.

Also usually you are charged a monthly fee for the box. i never got charged.
