My story was actually quite comical, the billing was horrible, and I finally cancelled telling them "your shit's out on the curb in a brown paper bag, garbage comes by monday, I'd hurry if I were you"

I was impressed with DirecTV today. I got a second TV at my house and wanted to add an HD DVR to it. I thought they would charge me for the new box (I paid $200 for my current one a couple of years ago) plus an additional $15 fee for the second TV ($5 lease charge and $10 HD Access). Instead they are giving me the box for nothing and I only pay an extra $5/month. I was out of contract and this puts me back in one, but that doesn't bother me...I like the service and don't plan on getting rid of it.

well when i started with Dish network like 6 yrs ago i paid $$ for each reciever upfront. Also i remember the page said PURCHASE of equipment on the bill. wish i had thought ahead and printed it out.

Also usually you are charged a monthly fee for the box. i never got charged.
You should really try to escalate your case then. Their billing is so bazaar though that often the fees aren't called out. If you subscribe to their "everything" pack, the fees are all waived. But every other year they seem to change the names of their packages and it's nearly impossible to figure out what's what.

I'm sorry, but I haven't read every word of this thread. If it's going to cost you money to return the equipment, you're sure it's yours and you can't get any resolution through their normal channels, try ceoatechostar.com. You might first want to try dialing into their system and getting in the que for technical assistance. These people are far sharper than their regular CSR's and can do everything they can in addition to tech support. They're happy to help too.

Be aware that the email address has been known for years and is being overused. I would also suggest you be polite and straightforward in your request. It will get you better results.

and people always complain about how horrible cable tv is, and they're going to switch to satellite...

note to Waggy:

Once you finish your honeymoon period with directv... they will also suck ass.

This. I have DirecTV. Not bad overall, but the DVR interface is pretty sluggish and it's expensive once all of your incentives run out. I just finished up my first year and my bill went from $55/month to $85/month.

Now I'm shopping around because I have the option of FIOS, local cable, or Dish.

I've never had any problems, billing, equipment or otherwise, but I do understand that it's a YMMV thing. I occasionaly hang out at http://www.satelliteguys.us/ and there are lots of complaints there. But, human nature is such that people don't post about how happy they are.

Cable was horrible here and OTA is near impossible. So, virtually everyone went to Sat for TV. Then Comcast came out and wired the whole township with brand new fiber optic. (Pole to pole that is.) My internet is pretty rock solid. I'm so entrenched with Dish, that I can't imagine switching. What I really like is their DVR. They are considered to be the best in the business.

i never had any issues with Dish, the reason i switch is because directv had a killer deal to expand from 1 to 4 rooms. I had called dish to see what it would take to expand to other rooms and they wanted to sell me more equipment and charge for installation plus slap another 2 year contract on me after i had been a customer for like 9 years. Dish had absolutely no customer loyalty at all. it was not 2 days later after i called dish to expand i had a directv guy knocking on my door and offed me the new install deal. as i said in my earlier post direct has better equipment.

I've had Dish, Direct, and Cablevision.

Guess what, they all blow, you won't win anywhere. Have fun being stuck with DTV for 2 years.

I get the most for my money with Cable so I stuck with them.. $89/month gets me 30/5 internet, nationwide voip, and family cable and HD is free.
