Why does Canada need any kind of an army? A few core of engineers guys to clear snow and build bridges in the northwest territory sure, but who messes with them?

Actually, some things about our military aren't so embarrassing. I know that the joint US-Canada fighting units in the Afghani mountains used Canadian snipers to great effect. Some of our vehicles are also coveted by other countries. Problem is, we can't get either out of the country without some help from the US or at least UPS. That infrastructure is gone.
But when the world wants peacekeepers, Canada is usually right in the middle of those efforts. To say that we have an untested army is unfair and untrue. They are just used differently than your own. Your forces are best suited to waging wars, while ours are more adept at preventing new ones. Please don't underestimate the value of the latter.

That's pretty stupid. The Canadian military has engaged in many of the major conflicts of our time. As Chansen mentioned Canada is among the most involved countries in the world for peace keeping (That's the little thing that happens after a big military operation).Plus If I were from Canada I would not trust an untested Army with no real combat experience to defend my country.
As per the definition peace keeping done effectively means there is less of a likelihood to war. It's politically and economically a better course of action when things allow.US Military is a experienced and trained fighting machine, we have no business in peace keeping

Unfortunately the canadian military is pathetically underfunded. I mean absolutely pathetic.

think the reason the Canadain Military in so underfunded is that they know that if they were ever invaded that the US would back them 100%, now will Canada do the same for the US, I'm not so sure.
It's true and I think also a little irresponsible, but you're right. Canada needs to pull its weight with military needs. Nobody is saying it should spend the same percentage of GDP as the US does, but among western nations Canada is one of the cheapest with its military.think the reason the Canadain Military in so underfunded is that they know that if they were ever invaded that the US would back them 100%, now will Canada do the same for the US, I'm not so sure.
But they do have free health care

Who even has the resources to invade any part of North America? I doubt the Russians have the ability anymore, let alone the interest. Perhaps China does, but they'd run the risk of losing the 2008 Beijing Games.
The age of nations waging war on a grand scale is over, replaced by smaller groups carrying out acts of terror to make their point.

I don't think any country can invade North America, not even china. We could pluck them out of the sky and sink their ships before they got to our shores, and I don't think thet are stupid enough to try to start a nuclear war.
I was just using an invasion as example

As Skoorb said, Canada does not have free health care. They tax you enough to cover the health care system.
