Canadians are easily offended when mistaken for Americans

You can easily distinguish an American from a Canadian. They either speak French or can't stop using the word "eh".

I've always thought how funny it is that Canadians are more like Americans than all but a handful of neighboring countries in the world but so damn quick to claim vast differences. Americans this, Americans that, it's not how we do it here we're Canadians, those stupid Americans, those fat idiotic pigs. Hey, can you go pick my Ford up at the shop? I just got new Michelins put on it. We'll swing by McDonalds later and listen to some American pop music on the radio. And tonight we'll watch Fox TV or maybe rent a movie filmed in Hollywood. Man, it's great we are not Americans that would suck!

Nope. "Americans" *always* refers to Citizens of the US. I'm not exactly sure when it started, but suspect it had to do with Manifest Destiny.
This is obviously correct. Sure technically Canadians are Americans insofar as they live in North America but nobody in Canada calls themselves Americans. Americans are citizens of the US. Any exceptions claimed on this board are completely antithetic to anything I've ever encountered in Canada.

In terms of nationality we would be Canadians, if we're going by the continent we reside on, we would be Americans/North Americans.

I liked you better when you still lived in NS

Australian eh? BBC tells me you like to cuss a lot. I approve. Can I come to Australia?

inane rambling
Actually, my friend is going there. He got a working holiday visa. He asked me about going but in the end I decided against it. I'll have to visit someday.

Pretty much everyone here in Toronto with a lick of sense agrees we're pretty much identical to Americans (at least the New York/east coast types). I think the small town (aka hick) Canadian is the one that disagrees vehemently with the thought we'd be similar.

To be fair I didn't say Sydney, Australia. There's actually one in Nova Scotia (though I don't live there, either). Perhaps Scouzer if he pretends I live in Sydney, NS will like me more.

Hey, I used to partake in the infantile America-bashing, I know how it goes 🙂 FWIW Americans don't dislike Canadians nearly as much as Canadians dislike Americans. As a whole I don't think Americans have a negative bias against Canadians at all to be honest with you. And you cannot say the same about Canadians in regard to how they view those from the US, can you?

North Dakota? Or Florida? Those are the only two that seem plausible, since you've already ruled out Australia and Canada.

I believe a lot of Canadians think we have something to prove to America. I don't really know why or what, but that's what I think is going on.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/american

Dictionary says no. 1 of the three definitions refers specifically to a US citizen. The rest refer to people that live in, you guessed it, america. Many inhabitants of south american nations will refer to themselves as americans.

err, which countries in SA have people referring to themselves as Americans? Sud americano means South American and is the only instance I can think of that South Americans use to refer to themselves.

Americans are referred to as Americanos or sometimes Norte-americanos meaning North American, which is kind of weird.

Canadians are easily offended by everything, except their own government classifying them as peasants. Peasant? That's ok. Mongolian? Hell no!

.. Not all south Americans speak Spanish for one.

And Brazil and Argentina are the two countries I've heard it the most from.

This is the truth. It is also true for Vancouverites and the PNW/West Cost type.

Well, Portuguese is the language spoken in Brazil. I can't say I know much about how they refer to themselves.

But I have not heard any Argentine refer to themselves as Americanos.

<===Lived in Buenos Aires for about 8 years.

Not exactly. I think it has more to do with political ideology. The people are not that different, ideology is a different matter.

At a glance there is really no way to tell the difference. Even a lot of people in the US say 'eh' (just the backwards northern US people in the U.P. Michigan, Wisconsin etc)

I think a lot is just good natured back and forth joking around.

And Brazil and Argentina are the two countries I've heard it the most from.

It's very anecdotal but I have heard several Brazilians say they were Americans. Don't know how wide spread that is though
