Meh. I visited Vancouver BC about a year ago. The night we showed up we saw a pimp beating up a prostitute at Granville and Davie, the hotel desk clerk tried to defraud us on our pre-booked pre-paid rooms (I had to be a real ass to get my way), and there was a triple homicide down on Hastings.

Nice place to visit, but I decided not to stay.

They knew you weren't Canadian since you didn't say eh?

Heh. Actually, I'm a native Pacific Northwesterner so I say "eh" pretty often, and I'm of mostly Scottish/Irish blood so I occasionally joke that Canada is a place where most everyone looks just like me (lots of Scottish in British Columbia).

But yeah, tourists always stand out regardless... they're the ones with the cameras taking pictures of buildings. :)

The reason crime is so low here is because we Canadians spend 7 months of the year indoors to get away from the cold winters. Having to scrape snow off the car windows in order to do a drive-by is not really worth the effort. Have you tried doing a drive-by at minus 30 in the middle fo February? Not fun.

Yeah, I know. I was just being a smartass. True story though, I think it was August 14th or 15th last year. I love the city and the country (though not the taxes and the socialism). Stopped and got a mocha and played some backgammon at Blunts too. Didn't sample, it was just nice to see.

You can get back the money you spent on tax in Canada if you're a foreigner.

Beside 14.5% sales tax, Canada's great.

Sales tax depends on the Province. Where I live, it's 7%.

i think he was talking about GST+PST

Yup where I live the tax is 14%. A three hour drive to the next province and the total tax is 7%.

Alberta, no sales tax, and no debt. Wonderful!

I'm in Calgary, and it was voted a couple months ago as the best City in the World by an independent study. I love it here. Homes are still relatively fair priced. Seems to be plenty of jobs, and it's very clean city with low crime.

Heh. No, I was staying (unfortunately) at the HoJo. I did notice that there were a lot of clubs in the area.
