What's with all the patting on the back here because of these donations? Rich countries are supposed to help poor ones. Hell, humans are supposed to help humans when disaster strikes. It is our obligation for the continuation of the human race.

It's kind of ironic that US spends hundreds of millions of dollars a day to "liberate" Iraqis and at the same time sends a measly sum of 35 million in emergency aid to Asian regions in time of one of the largest natural disasters in recent memory. Not that it's surprising given the poor record of US' foreign aid.
As a side note; another interesting thing I noticed is that all of a sudden you can watch, on American television, destruction and dead bodies caused by a natural disaster ~ yet when it comes to Iraq and the destruction and dead bodies caused by US bombs, the US media will show no such thing. Ohh well...

It must be nice to have a federal surplus allowing for generous donations. Of course the US must aid the tsunami victims but I can't help but think this is not the time to burden the budget any more.
BTW, where can you find out how much each country/corporation has given?
The world's richest nations have pledged more than $250 million US in emergency aid -- that includes $68 million from Spain, $35 million from the United States and $30 million from Japan. Britain has pledged $29 million.
