Worth a watch to see just how bad the drug, theft and overall crime issue has become. This focuses more on BC but it's really a problem everywhere. What's worse is some people are pushing for BC like policies even in Ontario when we already know the damage it has done to BC.

The US has learned that drug enforcement doesn't work. There's too much money to be made. If you doubt that, just look at the opioid epidemic. That wasn't started by nasty heroin dealers but by pharma companies.

The only solutions are education and access to mental health services - with no public stigma as to the latter.

So many addicts of every sort have underlying psych issues that they're trying to escape. But dealing with that means doing a complete pivot away from blaming the addicts. Sure, individual choice is critical. But those choices have to be made on the basis of a wide and easily access base of information.

The problem there though is that it will take decades to see results and you still need to do something constructive with addicts that have no interest in recovery.

Inflation is probably one of the main culprits, everything is just too expensive now such as housing, and the bills that come with it. You simply can't survive on a minimum wage job now days and if you have no education and no skills that's all you can find. One thing cities could do is allow for smaller dwellings and it should be legal to park a trailer on your own land and have someone live in it. Or buy land and park several trailers on it and all split the costs. or build a tiny house etc... There should be low tax regions where they allow this.

There will always be people that don't want any help though, these are the real troublemakers, they steal, assault, rape, vandalize etc. Those people need to be put in jail instead of allowed to roam free.

There would definitely still need to be some rules, like requiring sewer hockup etc. Point is there needs to be more affordable housing, and current rules make it so it's not really possible. There's minimum structure sizes which means higher taxes, and usually not allowed to have 2nd dwelling on same property etc.

Of course that's only half the problem. The more troublesome people don't even want help even if it was given to them for free.

The whole situation is a mess really, and won't be easy to solve.

Opening the safe injection sites is what made this problem worse in first place. They need to be shut down, and health units need to stop giving free needles too, and the drug houses need to be shut down. The government needs to stop enabling the crackheads. It's common sense. Think about it. Give drugs/needles to druggies, they do more drugs, and cause more trouble. Reduce the supply, they do less. Remove the entire supply, they stop altogether. Hard to remove completely but that should be the goal. Adding to the supply and actually enabling them is just retarded. That's why we're in this mess. BC is in an even bigger mess, clearly the "solution" of enabling them more is NOT helping.
