Can you tow a car with all wheel drive left in park.

Say someone parked their all-time all wheel drive car/suv in the wrong spot and was getting towed. Would the transmission lock up all the wheels and prevent it from being towed? Or would it release the front wheels when Park is enaged?
 
My grandpa towed his 4x4 dodge dakota from Eugene Oregon to Victorville California behind a motorhome with the transfer case in 4L and the transmission in P, he swears he put it in neutral but I suspect he had a senior moment. He ended up destroying both the transmission and the transfer case.

The transmission gets screwed. NYPD tow truck driver towed my friends Eagle Talon TSi and destroyed the transmission on it. I don't remember why the car got towed, but yeah they didn't claim any responsibility and my friend never followed up with it. He sold the car for like $2000 and it was mint otherwise.
 
Absolutely not. The transmission must be in Neutral and the other 2 drive wheels (fronts) should be on a dolly. Or put all 4 wheels on dollies. Best is put vehicle on a flatbed tow truck.

so basically if you have AWD you're screwed?

AWD + manual = leave transmission in neutral, engage parking brake. brakes fry.

AWD + auto = transmission in park. brakes/transmission fry.


how are the tow truck drivers gonna know if you have AWD/4WD or not?

They will drag it out of the parking spot before they put dollies on it. That dragging ain't good for it at all.

Don't think they'd just drag it down the road like that, but they'll definitely drag it out of the spot with all 4 wheels skidding.
 
price of being a retard I guess. I am against free-rides. Too many second chances given so everyone abuses it.

If your 'special' vehicle has issues valet it....if not park legally...if not you can't afford your ride.

I'm sure that nobody has any idea what you just said there, since it makes zero sense.......


But, nobody who illegally parks and gets towed is asking for a "free ride"...whatever that means. They DO, however, ask that they just pay the tow bill (which is typically outrageous) and have their car returned in the same working order and condition it was to begin with.

Again, parking where you're not supposed to might either get you a ticket or get you towed....it should NOT get your car damaged.

like watching parking wars and listening to the idiots who are double parked say they weren't and they just stepped out of their car.

I agree, and I never park illegally.

However, in some areas, the parking rules are kind of vague. I know that here, there have been many issues with what is called "predatory towing".....basically, tow trucks will go into a lot of a business that's open during the day only, and tow cars at night that might have parked there to go to a nearby restaurant or something.

Or someone parks in a fire lane in front of a store to load whatever they bought, and a tow truck dashes in and hooks up while they're bringing the items out.

Or a parking lot will have a time limit, and people get towed way before it runs out.

It's not just about parking illegally. But even if you're an asswipe and you intentionally park somewhere you're supposed to, you still shouldn't have to risk having some idiot tow driver damage your car.

i shouldn't have to drive defensively because somebody decided to drive while on drugs or alcohol, or watch other cars at stop lights or stop signs, but i do.

i know insurance is there to fix that, but everything we do has it's dangers so we should accept some personal responsibility for the choices we make. if we give them the chance, we are to blame.

That is effed up... and there is no room to argue with them either, after all they have your car.
 
You dont...my next door neighbor has his 2006 STi towed by our apartment parking patrol (He didnt want to stick the sticker to his windshield so he let it sit on his dash and it fell onto the passenger seat)

Except the moron driver towed it....out of the spot.....back wheels up, front wheels down. Not to mention it shouldn't have even been towed in the first place.

They tried to put the blame on him for not putting his permit correctly on the car but they realized you don't fuck with someone whose dad is a multimillionaire corporate attorney and personally knows the deputy prosecutor of OC. Supposedly his dad put suits against the apt complex, the security company, the tow company, the driver and someone else all for 50k each. It made them settle really damn fast.
