here is the thread that made me think of this

what is considered swimming:
-being able to tread water for around 2-5 min
-(if you have no physical problems) swimming the length of a typical backyard pool
-(if you have no physical problems) being able to swim some sort of length successfully underwater

I wasn't to great until nearing the end of college. My GF took it as a mission to teach me. I'm fairly decent now.

i can float, and i can swim the length of a pool underwater. my big downfall is trying to breathe and swim at the same time (i know key important elment). i can't thread water at all. get too much panic.

Very good... even had some lessons rescue swimming.

I could also swim for at least 15 minutes with all my clothes on. (probably down to 5 through lack of training)

i suppose the main thing is

can you keep your self from drowning if you had to for say about 5 min.

i myself have been swimming since i can remember, and am a certified scuba diver

i'm 22 and I can't swim =(. I went kayaking once, and it flipped over in the middle of the ocean. I came back up and held on to the kayak until coast guard came 45 minutes later.

now, why would I go kayaking in the ocean if i don't know how to swim you ask? I'm an idiot. I do things because I want to, and don't really think about the consequences. I should listen to my gf and mom more. But that day, I will always remember, and it sure as hell is funny!

Thats when he will finally learn to swim, otherwise he will sink. That worked well for me when I was a kid.

Yes, not that well, but I was working on it.

go learn to swim, its basic skill that everyone should know

I'm no Michael Phelps..but I can swim to save my life. I can't really freestyle..but I can do the froggy and the dog paddle. Go me!

i can't do freestyle , but i can side stroke and breast stroke good enough not to drown. other than being out of shape aerobically, i could probably do 2-4 laps

If you can get in a pool that's deeper than you are tall and not drown, then you can swim by the most basic definition I'd use.
