I run my monitor at home at 85hz. At 75hz flicker isn't too noticeable, but I like 85hz better. Any lower than 75hz and I will start to notice it (either directly by seeing the flicker or indirectly by feeling a headache coming on after a couple hours usage). As for the whine of TVs and monitors, I can definetly hear that. Not all monitors whine, but my monitor at home whines occasionally, usually after it's moved somewhere. Its funny though, my brother could hear it as well but my parents couldn't.

I have poor eyesight and very thick glasses. Any CRT set at 60Hz will give me a headache. How could anyone not notice the flicker?

The claim that humans cannot hear high frequency sound above 22kHz is definitely debatable. A lot of people can distinguish sound at high frequencies, not as acute as dogs of course. The music industry is smart enough to sample at 44kHz for digital audio.

Squeal = yes
60hz = not so bad (but headache inducing after a few hours) if you look directly at it but the flickering is really bad out of the corner of your eye (peripheral vision).

yeah the flicker at 60HTz is nuts!!! as well as the TV hum, i can hear it before i walk in the house

The 60Hz on monitors really annoys me. Some of my friends don't even notice it and I am looking at their monitors saying how can you stand this? Granted my eyes are really sensitive and I will have my eyes shut in about 90% of the pictures taken of me since my eyes are too sensitive to the sudden flash from the camera. I can hear/sense the TV hum too. I can tell when a TV is on but with a blank screen or from another room without hearing the sound.

Good luck. They don't make them like that anymore. You can barely find 19" CRTs that will do 1600x1200 above 75hz. :(

I can certainly see 60hz and sometimes I can see 75hz.

I can't see it, but I can immediately tell when a monitor is set at 60 Hz. It just does something to my eyes . . .

Yes but it's interlaced.

I've heard lots of people claim they can't tell the difference between 60hz and 80+hz. I don't know what's wrong with these people. The easiest way to help them see it is for them to look to the right or left of the monitor and notice the waviness.

I think it has to do with how fast our brains are "refreshing", relative to our optic nerve, which is why some of us can see 60hz. Even flourescent lighting starts to bother me. Although I can't see the refresh like you can on a monitor, my eyes are picking up the fluctuation of the AC current. The "solidity" of reflected light isn't there like it is with sunlight or normal bulbs. Makes me feel like I'm in a dream.

i refuse to use a CRT on anything less than 85HZ, even at that i can see the screen flicker around the corners (especially on bright and white backgrounds). Thats alo the biggest reasons i've owned an LCD for the past 5 some years.

I can hear the TV squel from far far away (hear it, i dont know how you can feel it... its just really high pitched tone). I think that runs in the fam though, my mom has exceptional hearing in terms of the frequency limits.

She had one of those health checks done before getting a job couple years ago and part of it was eye and hearing exam. Apparently she heard tones that are much higher than what's considered the limit for human hearing.

It's bit weird though, sometimes i hear these really high tones (as in TV, but slightly higher pitch) but there are no TVs around.

I can notice if a CRT monitor is at anything less than 75Hz (what I run mine at home at, they won't go any higher).

I can also hear *some* TVs squealing, but not all.

I can't see it flicker at 60hz. it really doesn't bother me at all, but I can hear the tv.

on a side note, I always get sick at lan parties (read: major headache) and can't be around it for more then 4-5 hours before i get major migrains. But then again, I can spend hours at the computer labs at school with no problems...

I think that's just the result of your head vibrating as you chew. Seriously. If you burp, it's even better :) And, if you hum at a note that a harmonic of the monitor frequency, you can see the scan lines slowly moving down.

My boss at my old job was adamant that no one could see a monitor flicker at 60Hz, even though I can very easily and it gives me a headache. Most notably, with a whitebackground the monitor flicker is quite apparent. Still, he insisted I was imagining things, that the human eye could not possible pick up on something refreshing at 60 times a second. In fact, he even went so far as to say the human eye had a refresh rate of 24 fps. Presumably he got that little piece of information from hearing that movies are filmes at around that rate, and thought that meant that was the limit for the human eye.

Furthermore, he also inistsed that humans could not hear high-frequency sounds, such as the ones given off by monitors or televisions. Again, I can. A television that is on emits a very high-pitched squeal that I can feel in my eardrums even more than I can hear it. It sounds like a cicada except much higher pitched. Again, even though I am living proof that it is possible, he refused to believe me.

So, I ask you, minions of ATOT, are you among the few who can discern such things? Gimme a few minutes to work on a poll as I haven't created one since the forums were upgraded.

Why not have him set the refresh rate with you not looking, then and ask you what it is.

I can hear the flyback transformer tone from video equipment. My parents can't. When I was a kid they literally thought I was having auditory hallucinations when I told them I could hear televisions from across the street.

And yeah, flicker drives me nuts - so does tape flutter and dirt on my windshield.
