Does anyone rent GPS systems? I know rental car places offer them with the rental, but does anyone rent JUST the gps device?

I see a lot of websites like rentgps.com, but they look like they were put together by an 11 year old. Seems shady.

?

It's a serious question. We're going on a trip and rather than spending money on buying one, I'd just like one for the weekend.

For survey grade units certainly. I haven't heard of any place that rents consumer grade units. Maybe call one of those tool rental places or one of those shady furniture/stereo rental places and ask.

don't know anyone who has one? I am not sure about availability of rental. If you are not quite morally upright, you can always pick one up from BB and then return it :)

I picked up a Garmin Nuvi 200W for less than $150 from Best Buy 2-3 months ago. It's well worth the money.

Otherwise... I'd just see if a family member, friend, or co-worker has one you can borrow.

Fine...

Short of a friend loaning you one, or buying one from a place like best-buy, and then returning it a couple of days later, you're probably SOL.

If you could find your way to where I live, you can borrow mine. ;)

I actually thought about doing that w/ Best buy. I didn't think it was such a silly question, seeing as you can rent practically anything anymore.

Another vote for buying and returning it. But i would do it at walmart since they are less likely to ask questions.

you can get a GPS with txt to speach for less than $100, so it wouldn't really be worth renting imho.

wallymart employee:"why are you returning it?"

customer:"Because it kept trying to be a backseat driver. I hate people telling me turn left here, turn right there."

wallymart employee:"..."

Try a map. If you can't get to any location on the globe with a map, you don't need to be leaving your house.

Yeah - A second vote for the TomTom ONE 130/130S (which has text-to-speech, if you want the unit to speak street names). It's been offered at really solid, affordable prices over the last few weeks, and it's extremely easy to use and figure out. You can also get the newest maps with the TomTom 30-Day Map Guarantee. It's probably not worth your time to rent.

Have you tried asking one of the car rental places if they'll rent a unit to you? They might with a deposit.
