The poll lies. Of the people I know, probably only half can do a decent job of parallel parking. I know plenty of people who won't even attempt it, they'll jsut keep driving looking for a differnet spot.

I can in the car that I was taught how to drive in. Not in the minivan that I use.

Actually, I've never tried to parallel park my minivan. But I'm terrible at all the other kinds of parking.

/me needs more experience

I can do it but anymore I don't like it. When I lived in Philly I was able to do it like it was my job, but since I've lived in areas that haven't required the need for it and upgrading my car I haven't had a lot of practice. It only takes 2 tries on a bad day even then.

Edit: The more I think about it, all the spots I have had to parallel pack in have been on the left side of the street. I guess they are in cities where everything in one way.

yup. with a trailer.

EDIT: was out working on a jobsite Thursday, a new korean catholic church. This korean guy drove out onto the site with his new xterra, and took a bunch of pictures with his SLR digicam. He climbed up on the roof of the xterra to get some oblique shots.
I am operating an excavator, and over the noise, I hear this rather loud crunch. He has backed into the tall foundation wall with the corner of his rig, smashing all the lights on one side and mangulating the bumper. The 6" concrete footing did not give much;)

He gets out and winces, trys the rear hatch <it is fuxored:p>. Gets back in and tries to back out of there. Apparently, his sum total of backing experience involves putting his arm over the back, looking back and to the right, and backing to the right. "Mirrors? WE don' need no stinking MIRRORS!"
He tries to repeatedly back into the storm pond on the right, like 10 times or so. This is while backing past me, in a space about 24' wide. He gives up on that, pulls into a indented area of the foundation, then attempts to remove his front bumper by catching it on the foundation by turning sharply and backing. He stops just in time on that one. Finally, I see his remaining tail light leave the site and my partner and I are "WTF, Mate?"

God, we have one of these threads like every week.
WTF man?

:p Just kidding.
Yeah, I can parallel park, but I'd rather find somewhere where I don't have to.

I'd parallel park if I could find a damn space around here (NYC). :p

I have fit my 19-foot Lincoln into 20-foot spots. :) I think that's a yes. How on earth can someone pass their driver's test without knowing how to parallel park?

On second thought, that's a stupid question given all the morons I see trying to pull in front-first.

Someone I knew was worried cause theyd have problems backing INTO the parking space the DMV provides, its freakin huge and not that hard.

parallel park and backing into a parking space are not tested in the place i got the license, Boston.

not very hard anyway, the spaces are rather large

I can but I won't if I don't have to since there's too many people who try and can't.

Did it fine no problem during the drivers test, but I haven't parallel parked since then.

I lived in downtown Toronto for a year and a half, so I had to know how to just to live there.

I knew before that, but didn't have much practice in Tampa.

Coming from NYC, I find it amazing that 1) people can't parallel park and 2) there are places where it's not necessary. :D I'm pretty good at it when I'm borrowing a car (don't own one).
