If your body got really cool to the point of being below normal Body Temperature, probably.

I used to sleep with the fan on high when I was a kid. I keep it on medium now because it makes annoying noises if its left on high, and I haven't been sick from it.

No. The fan cannot lower the room temperature and your body temperature enough to get you ill unless the room was already cold to begin with.

I never have understood people who think fans themselves cool things. They must be the same people who think an airplane on a treadmill won't take off...

If fans cooled things, why do we have all these A/C units around? They move air, the air they're moving in has to be cooler than what's being replaced for it to have a cooling effect.

Now I've heard it's bad for your health to leave a fan on while you sleep for other reasons, such as allergies (blowing pollen and such around the room), if it starts raining and the fan is in the window there are fairly obvious issues, etc.

Fans do cool things, they just don't do it by lowering the temperature of the air.

This subject seems to come up at least once per year...someone with "old-country" Asian parents asks about sleeping with a fan. Anyone see the common denominator in this?

A friend said she always slept with a fan for the noise when she lived in detroit. She said it drowned out the gun shots.

If its dusty you can wake up with a sore throat/stuffed up nose and cold like symptoms from the dust continuesly going into your airways. Make sure you wipe the dust off if its really dusty if you keep it on you for the entire night.

We installed the ceiling fan in our bedroom almost eight years ago. In the time since, the fan has been off for maybe a week total. We're still here.

I get sick if a fan is directly on me. Always have. My wife likes the fan right on her though, so I usually have to cover up or something :(

I spent a summer in China teaching English, and my students all thought I was crazy to sleep with the fan on - and blowing on me no less. They would sleep in the ridiculous heat, rather than have a fan blow on them.

Edit: I just saw a commercial, and it claimed that 4 out of 10 high school students don't graduate. Is that for real? If so, that explains a lot.

1) Get a blanket. 2) Cold doesn't make you sick. 3) If your body cools down, you'll not be sweating, thus the coolest your body could possibly get is room temperature. Assuming you are a naturally warm-blooded creature, maintaining body temperature will be no problem.

And yes, a fan will increase the temperature of the air in a room. If you've got a 60W fan, you've got the equivalent of a 60W space heater in the room. You'll probably not even notice the resulting temperature change though.

The easiest way to die from a fan is to pull the wires out the back of it, wrap them around knives, and jam the knives into your chest. That'll happen before it kills you in the night.

I must be one of those weak sick prone types because the other half insisted we have the fan on last night and low and behold I dont fell good today...

It screws with my sinuses I think...

Heh...same boat here. My ears hurt and I get all plugged up with a sore throat the next morning if it's blowing right on my face.

LOL

I've slept with a box fan blowing straight onto me for at least 15 years now. Sometimes (read: most of the time) bare ass naked without covers.

I should be dead by now if I go by that logic. Although I don't have a fan blowing directly at me.
