Have you used usenet?

I use the usenet very heavily but a few days ago I offhand mentioned it to a couple friends and they had never heard of usenet. I tried to explain it to them but I never seemed to get the point across. Anyone got any better ways to describe usenet? What would you say are the top 3-4 things you would say about usenet?
