I'll go with Blade Runner and honorable mention for Sci-Fi comedy gold, Galaxy quest.

I am constantly surprised at how many people have never heard of Galaxy Quest. We watch it least once a year. So quotable.

IS THERE AIR? YOU KNOW DON'T KNOW!!

I wish they had the cuts for the R version. It sounds like it would have been even better yet.

No mention of Gravity yet. And in terms of writing I don't think you can put anything but Gattaca and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at the top of your list, both would make "best films" lists in any genre and not just sci fi.

Thanks for the additional suggestions! I liked Gravity. I'd probably not watch it again, just because I was literally on the edge of my seat pretty much the entire time haha.

Galaxy Quest is a freaking AWESOME movie. My two favorite parts:

Where the one guy, Guy, is dressed in red or whatever the colors the people in Star Trek who beam down with the captain wear but who are inevitibly killed because you can't have the Kirk or Spock killed. So Guy is stressed out that he's that guy that is going to get killed. Then they are on the planet with those mean little monsters, and Sigorney Weaver says something like, "We've got to get off this planet before those things kill Guy!"

Then, when Brandon is trying to save the universe, everything is on the line, time is of the essence, and he has to break because his mom made him take out the trash. Too funny.

I actually think part of what made it work was that it was clean...it kept it fun.
