Grammar Nazi != helpful

If it's readable then shut the fuck up about it.

WTFE, it's the very definition of helpful. Besides, it's a thread about the shape of beer glasses... how much "help" do you think any more posts in this thread even CAN be?

Only an IDIOT wouldn't appreciate knowledge they can use. I, for one, appreciate it when someone corrects my word usage. FWIW, "grammar" != vocabulary

That was my thought. Sam Adam's has to be the most over-rated beer ever.

I'm not sure if someone already mentioned this, but a bulge at the very bottom is good for wheat beers because it keeps the crap at the bottom where it belongs and away from your mouth.

I don't know about that shape, but for wine glasses, it does make a difference if you nose the wine. Also, certain lips of the glasses force the wine into different parts of the tongue to primarily stimulate specific taste buds. A good example would be taking a Moscato d'asti through a conventional wine glass vs. the champagne flute - the nose of the wine is better in the conventional wine glass. Of course, the flip side is that the bubbles do not last nearly as long...

I don't know of a single glass that you put into your mouth to drink from. Every glass I've ever seen stops at your lips and I don't know anyone that has a mouth the size of a sperm whale so, so that point is just, well, retarded.

I'm not sure how you drink, but when I drink from a glass, the liquid tumbles over the edge as it enters my mouth. A bead around the edge will help aerate the liquid as it leaves the glass.

This concept is apparently too complex. Unless you swish the liquid around in your mouth before you swallow it, it misses the tip of your tongue if you drink like a normal person. No glass-blowjob required and this is still true.

Strange. With pint glasses, no matter what I'm drinking, unless the glass is absolutely filled to the top, I place the glass just over my bottom lip and my tongue naturally rests under the rim. Whatever I drink rolls over the tongue, that's how I've drank for as long as I can remember. That seems efficient to me, but if I'm chugging that method isn't effective, but gets me the flavor reward when drinking slower.

Color, of course.

thickness, most likely.

shape? ehhhh, that's a stretch. But maybe when you consider some bottom-fermented or whatever type bears, ...maybe?

I'm not saying it is or isn't but why should one version of alcohol be different from the other? You drink other types in special glasses cus it's supposedly better. I don't drink anything in special glasses but some people swear by it.

Because different beers are brewed different ways, with different ingredients. While some have mentioned the aromatics, you can't forget about how the shape of a glass can alter the way the bubbles and head form. If you've ever had a Quad in a goblet compared to the bottle, the experience is a billion times better when it's from the goblet. It's the same ideal for any aromatic beer that's fruit based - the Cherry Wheat, their new Blackberry Wit, any Lambic - I just had a bottle of Three Philosopher's and I was provided a goblet. When we asked for an extra glass, they gave us another goblet - obviously a bar doesn't give a fuck about marketing, but they are going to serve me the beer properly.

Where's Magnus to shut you guys up?

no, they serve you the beer in a way to elevate your beer experience so youll think of their beer joint as the ultimate beer joint

in wine tasting one would spit out the wine so the alcohol wont bias ones tastes

in a bar people are typically there for a bunch of pints and fun or more and the subtle tastes from one servingware vs another isnt noticeable

if it looks like beer and tastes like beer serve it to me i dont give a shit if ist in a dixie cup

Exactly. But we're talking about whether or not the glass affects taste, not whether or not YOU care. And while that vast majority of beer drinkers do go to the bar just to throw back a few long necks, you folks must realize that there is a sect of beer drinkers who do actually go to bars that enjoy the experience of tasting the subtleties of different beers. It's not uncommon to pick a beer up, take a sip, discuss the flavors/mouthfeel/etc and then put it down and move on to the next. There are beer tastings just as there are wine tastings. For people who enjoy this idea of beer, the glassware absolutely, without a shadow of a doubt, makes a difference. Does it make a difference to John Doe beer guzzler? No, probably not, but for those with more "refined" tastes it does.

Every other alcoholic drink has its own special glass, so why is it so far fetched that a beer's flavor can be affected by how it flows / sits in a glass?

Ever read the label on a Hoegaarden bottle? It says to serve in a hexagonal glass. I'm not really sure if it changes the flavor or not.

Guys, guys, we're going nowhere fast here... I hereby volunteer myself as subject of a double blind beer glass shape/taste study. I'll take one for the team and drink a few in the name of science.

Now I just need funding.

I don?t have a degree in thermodynamics or anything but Id image that the temp increase via air transfer would be much less and much longer of a process than pouring it into a room temp thicker glass. Now if you regularly drink from frosted\chilled glasses this is a moot point.

Pour some beast into it. If you can finish a beer then it must make it taste better.
