Can the shape of a glass really effect a beer's flavor?

I just saw a Sam Adams commercial about how their special glasses enhance the flavor by trapping certain things in certain areas and all sorts of bullshit. Do people actually buy this crap?

edit:
This is what I'm talking about: BEER GLASS
The only thing they mention that makes some sense is how the thickness of the glass can effect keeping the temperature. Other than that, pure BS.

No. The shape of a glass will not affect the taste of beer. In some extreme cases, not exposing the beverage to air may preserve the taste, but the combination of exposure to light and no longer being chilled will do more damage to the taste of a beer than limiting air exposure could ever preserve.

No, Sammy's will still taste like shit no matter what glass you put it in.

Pint glasses are the perfect shape. You know, because they hold exactly one pint of beer.

The laser etching on the bottom makes some sense. It is creating more nucleation points for the co2 to break out of solution more consistently. Though, that will trap bacteria if the glass isn't cleaned properly.

I don't know that I'd be skeptical. Why's beer any different from wine?

None of this has anything to do with what they are advertising. Some of it sounds hokey but shaping the glass so more of the beer hits the front of your tongue and having it release more bubbles are both scientifically sound beer glass mods. They are claiming more aroma release, not flavor protection.

I say yes, but not to the extent they say. Since part of your sense of taste is associated with your sense of smell, being able to smell what you're drinking better will improve your ability to taste it.

I don't know of a single glass that you put into your mouth to drink from. Every glass I've ever seen stops at your lips and I don't know anyone that has a mouth the size of a sperm whale so, so that point is just, well, retarded.

I wouldn't read too much into it. It's not going to dramatically change any beer you put into the glass(I don't think they're claiming that either). It'll just ensure that it's the best it can be, and you get a nifty looking glass on top of it.

I guess, but I don't think our sense of smell is keen enough for a change in glass shape to effect the smell and therefore the taste of it noticeably. You still smell plenty out of a normal shaped glass.

Yeah, the thickness will affect the temperature, but using thinner glass will increase the rate of heat transfer from the air.

I'm not sure how you drink, but when I drink from a glass, the liquid tumbles over the edge as it enters my mouth. A bead around the edge will help aerate the liquid as it leaves the glass.

True, that's why I said not to the extent they say. Besides, after 5 or 6 beers I'll drink pretty much any beer you put in front of me so it's not like a small difference in taste makes a difference anyway unless you're a pretentious douchebag having a beer tasting party.

This concept is apparently too complex. Unless you swish the liquid around in your mouth before you swallow it, it misses the tip of your tongue if you drink like a normal person. No glass-blowjob required and this is still true.

No it doesn't. It hits the tip of your tongue directly. We're talking about glasses here, not beer bongs :^S

Actually, the way I drink out of a glass the beer does indeed miss the tip of my tongue. When I drink the glass is kind of resting on my tongue so the glass rim is above some of the tongue.

Also, this is the most ridiculous analysis of drinking I've ever been a part of.

I just took a drink out of a few different glasses in my cabinet and I didn't give my glass a blowjob, but the liquid still missed the very tip of my tongue. I had my wife and my dad try it as well. No glass-sucking going on and the tips of our tongues were 0/3. Could just be that we all tip our head slightly further back than some, but so far this is true at least in these specific instances.

I agree, but it's at least interesting.

I drink the same way. I also feel the same way about this thread :p

Apparently Sam Adams thinks their customers are ridiculously pretentious or just plain stupid.
