Based on this thread, apart from exclusive titles, I'm struggling to think of a reason why I need to buy any more PS3 games in the future!!
There really isn't any, the main strengths of the console for someone with a good PC setup already is mainly coop play with friends and exclusive titles. Don't get me wrong, there's some really good games on the PS3, Heavy Rain, Demon's Souls, Red Dead Redemption etc, but really that's the only reason to get one.
Now the logistics are sorted. With regard to games, how do you tell which games are ported to consoles? Will these not look that much better on PC than console due to this? Or will the superior PC power show through even if games not designed for it?
Even if the game is identical on the console and PC, it's still going to look better on the PC for a few reasons.
1) True High Definition (1080p), almost no AAA console games are actually 1080p, in fact a lot of them aren't even 720p, graphically demanding games like GTA IV for example are usually 640p. This large jump in screen resolution has a massive impact on the quality of the image.
2) Proper Anti-Aliasing, consoles tend to use very bad anti-aliasing to blur out games or just miss out Anti-Aliasing all together, this can greatly improve image quality.
3) Decent texture filtering, 16x Anisotropic Filtering is trivial for the PC and cleans up the image nicely.
4) Higher graphics settings, while the engine for the game might be identical in a lot of cases, there will usually be other settings that can be tweaked to offer better experience on a PC, things like the resolution of shadows, the draw distance, general LOD distance - all these things can be offered without fundamental changes to the engine or a lot of time spent tailoring for PC
5) Smoother frame rate, some console games are absolutely fucking terrible for frame rate, and there's nothing you can do about it.
6) Mods, one of the best reasons to get a PC, modding communities given the right tools will endlessly improve games adding their own upgrades and tweaks which you can download and install for free.
7) PC specific tailored options, if you're lucky you'll get additional graphics options, DirectX 10 and 11 effects, sometimes higher resolution textures, smoother animation, etc
Point 5-7 tends to be hit or miss depending on what the particular developer decides to implement in the game, but 1-4 are always benefits even if they're not officially supported and between them represent a significant increase in graphical fidelity.
You know as well as I do that HDMI cables are, probably, the worst-designed interface in the history of cabling. I literally have to use the pressure from the wall, behind my TV, to keep those mother fucking cables in place or they will just wiggle right out.
Something wrong with your cables, I have HDMI running all over the place between my PS3/PC/Projector and they're all excellent connections, I don't know how cables are wiggling out of anything it sounds like there's stress on the cable pulling at them in which case you've probably knackered your HDMI ports.
