I have a win xp pro Base, connected to a win me client, w/a wireless us robotics 8054 router using a pci adapter usr 5416. The Base is wired thru the router to a cable modem using Comcast as the ISP.

I have two problems,
1. After being shut down and restarted I can whatch the router lights shut off for the lan connection. The light goes off when the computer is shut down, (then the lan comes back on), then shuts off again, when the computer is booted up again. It then takes anywhere from 5 mins to an hour and a half to come back on. Sometimes this can be accellerated by disabling and enabling the local area connection in the network connections box. I have had times when I had to unplug everything and reconfigure the entire setup. Then comes problem...

2. After the Icon appears saying the local area connection (LAC) is now connected, there appears another Icon saying the internet connection (IC) is now connected. The LAC connects at 100 mbps and the IC connects at 10 mbps. I believe it is the IC that gives me my internet and it is understandibly slower than when I had just the LAC connection. The USR people have no idea where this comes from, although it acts like it is being assigned by the router. They also said it isn't needed. I have tried every which way I can think of to disable this thing. Even when I was able to get rid of it, it came back! Unfortunatly, I don't know which of the 100 things I switched, unpluged, disabled and enabled did the trick. Whatever it was it didn't last. The only security I have enabled currently is the 256 wep. The anti virus, norton internet protection, xp and personal firewall and the router firewall and any spam , popup or ad blockers are all disabled, plus I ran spybot with no problems found.

If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate hearing from you! Thanks, JAWS

Fiveohhh,

Yes, both machines have sluggish internet and both have periodic trouble sharing files. The windows XP is connected to the router by Ethernet cable, 3Com Gigabit NIC and the windows ME is connected wireless to the router with a USR PCI adapter. The client (or ME) can get Internet all the time, whether the XP is on or not and whether, ofcourse, the LAN is on or not.

I am trying to use TCP/IP and netBUIE alone, but I suspect some other protocals are involved because I had to keep installing protocals to get things like print and file share to work. So, also working is MS file and print, Client for MS network, QoS packet scheduler, NWnetbios, NWlink netbios/IPX/SPX compatable transport, and Service Advertising Protocal. However, under advanced settings in the network connections under Client for MS networks I only have TCP/IP checked and under MS file and print sharing I have only netBUIE checked. Again, I'm not sure that is all I'm getting. By the way, my Internet connection that appears magically does not show up in the Network Connections, under avanced settings (tab), and has under its properties a setting box that allows you to authorize internet users to access IPsec, PPTP, and 7 virtual setting connections, all having to do w/communications such as, HTTP, SMTP, Telnet etc.. I have none of these checked.

Thanks for your interest, hope you can help.

The "Internet Connection" connection is an effect of UPnP (Universal Plug-in-Play) in Windows xP; ME, aka Windows 98 3rd edition. doesn't have it. I've noticed this occurs with newer broadband routers, making it handy to manage your router's connection, as well as port forwardings.
