I have a win xp pro Base, connected to a win me client, w/a wireless us robotics 8054 router using a pci adapter usr 5416. The Base is wired thru the router to a cable modem using Comcast as the ISP.
I have two problems,
1. After being shut down and restarted I can whatch the router lights shut off for the lan connection. The light goes off when the computer is shut down, (then the lan comes back on), then shuts off again, when the computer is booted up again. It then takes anywhere from 5 mins to an hour and a half to come back on. Sometimes this can be accellerated by disabling and enabling the local area connection in the network connections box. I have had times when I had to unplug everything and reconfigure the entire setup. Then comes problem...
2. After the Icon appears saying the local area connection (LAC) is now connected, there appears another Icon saying the internet connection (IC) is now connected. The LAC connects at 100 mbps and the IC connects at 10 mbps. I believe it is the IC that gives me my internet and it is understandibly slower than when I had just the LAC connection. The USR people have no idea where this comes from, although it acts like it is being assigned by the router. They also said it isn't needed. I have tried every which way I can think of to disable this thing. Even when I was able to get rid of it, it came back! Unfortunatly, I don't know which of the 100 things I switched, unpluged, disabled and enabled did the trick. Whatever it was it didn't last. The only security I have enabled currently is the 256 wep. The anti virus, norton internet protection, xp and personal firewall and the router firewall and any spam , popup or ad blockers are all disabled, plus I ran spybot with no problems found.
If anyone has any ideas I would appreciate hearing from you! Thanks, JAWS
