Can someone recommend a good radar detector?

My cousin just bought a new Lexus, and I was thinking about getting him a radar detector for Christmas as he really needs one. I have absolutely no knowledge as to whats good or bad, but I"m trying not to spend a lot of money either. Trying to keep it at $100 or less.

Thanks.

Perhaps you guys missed the part about $100 or so. The Valentine One and Escort are $400 and $300 respectively.

I did, though he does say "Try to keep it at $100 or less," not "Required to be under $100."

Me, I'd rather pay the extra for something that works well, rather than pay less from something that barely works. :p

You could argue the additional capability is not worth the extra cost, except that you'd make it up in the first 2 speeding tickets you get using a cheap detector.

Pool your money with siblings/family, and get him one big gift.

In lieu of a cheapo radar detector you may as well put a little alarm on your dash that beeps randomly every few minutes to keep you alert. That is essentially what they're doing. Unless you shell out for the Escort 8500 or V1, just practice safe speeding! Don't be the "leader of the pack"-- always use another speeder as a "rabbit". Keep scanning behind you for Crown Vic lights and/or light bars on tops of cars. Take note of your surroundings-- never be the fastest dude on any given road. And you're good!

Well thats why I'm asking you guys. I know there are a lot of car buff's. Just wondering if there's a fairly inexpensive radar that works pretty well? I'm sure there's got to be a few. Otherwise I need a new gift idea.

Oh , I didn't catch that you were getting it as a gift. I would say skip the detector and get him a factory accessory, like a trunk tray or something :)

I have a $35 detector in my car...drive fast all the time...and have never gotten a speeding ticket with this detector.

True... an extra set of factory floor mats is always nice, except for a Lexus those would probably run $200.

'fairly inexpensive radars detectors' don't belong in a sentence with 'work pretty well'. you get what you paid for. and like previously said, it'll pay for itself after a ticket or two. the V1 is pretty much the most expensive, the other two slightly cheaper alternative is the passport and bel 98x. i'm not sure what the last digit is, could be 985. i got a 980 several years ago and i think they got a newer model.

LMAO...just saying. Buying a $400 detector isn't going to save you from a ticket any more than a $35 one IMO.

The way i use it is as a early warning system...not as an excuse to speed all the time. If i didn't have one, i'd probably drive the same way.

Umm... no!

check my 2nd link in first post.

"DOMINATION: It?s the radar range, folks.
In C/D?s latest test, V1 earned a perfect score in four of the six test categories, and outscored all others in yet another category. Notice the score on radar range (Sensitivity), 61 percent higher than second-best Passport 8500, and nearly double that of third-place BEL."

and the Whistler has about 20% of the detection range of the Valentine against radar.

Exactly. Anything other than a V1 or Escort 8500 is just throwing your money away. If you can't afford one of those, then don't get a radar detector at all.
