in terms of party presence, no doubt, but IMO, it's too early to say how much liberal/conservative the next congress will be in comparison to the previous one. some conservative democrates were replaced with moderate Republicans, and vice versa.

Indeed. Real problems come in when being defeated in a popular election makes you doubt either yourself or your opinions. I care as little about having 59 million people vote for Bush as I do about 55 million people, along with me, voting for Kerry. Elections don't decide the validity of opinions, and I would say the same thing even if Kerry had won.
