Can I use an XP processor on a KT133 chipset and underclock it?? I'll explain....

I want to start upgrading my computer here pretty soon, and have been debating back and forth about where to go for the main components first or to start with the monitor. Well, I currently have an ABIT KT7-RAID motherboard with an 800Mhz T-Bird in it. To upgrade my main system, I need three things: upgraded processor, new mobo, and DDR 2100 RAM. I am definitely going for an AMD system, as it's a little cheaper on the budget. I am only going to be able to buy these things seperately over the next few weeks, as I am not made of money. But being the person I am, I hate to buy something and have it set and not be used. And I'm not good with money at all, so I would rather buy the stuff as I get the money for it. What I want to know is, if I go ahead and buy a processor, (I'm going for the XP 1800+), will I be able to use this in my current motherboard and just underclock it? From my thinking standpoint, I would beleive this is possible. Plus, I could run it at around 1200-1400Mhz and get a speed increase currently, until 2 weeks from now when I would be able to hopefully go ahead and pick up both my mobo and RAM.

Please tell me this is possible. Thanks for any input.

i heard some people running 266bus 1.4 thunderbirds in a 200bus mobo, but they run at 1066 instead of 1.4 don't know about XP's though - i have a 200 bus mobo currently with a duron 700 - its holding my GF3 Ti200 back so i'm wondering the same thing as you mate. it is getting pretty hard to find any 1.4 athlons on 200bus now. 1.1 are still popular though.

Ya, I'm in the same situation. My 800 T-Bird is holding my GF4 Ti4400 back. I gotta get my money's worth outta that thing! Especially when it runs like a rock at Ti4600 speeds!

It will take a combination of L1, L3, L4, L10 and L11 bridges to get what you want. Here is the Painting Guide for determining Athlon XP multipliers past 12.5X for you daring gentlemen. ;)

Please let us know how it turns out!

btw - Here is straight from Abit's website:

Question:

Why can't ABIT KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.0/1.1/1.2 and KT7E mainboards support AMD AthlonXP processors?

Explanation:

ABIT KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.0/1.1/1.2 mainboards were designed before AMD launched the new AthlonXP processors. AMD new processor AthlonXP is slightly different from old Athlon and need a hardware modification. Without the modification, system may boot up flawlessly sometimes but fail to power on in some cases. It's the root cause why KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.0/1.1/1.2 and KT7E mainboards cannot support AthlonXP processors.

ABIT KT7A / KT7A-RAID V1.3 had implemented the hardware modification to fulfill new CPU requirement and be able to support AthlonXP. Other vendors' KT133/KT133A mainboards also differentiate the AthlonXP support from board version.

It shouldn't be a problem if you peel back on the FSB to 'underclock' it. I don't think you need to change the mulitpliers at all.

EDIT: Wait, it's a KT133, probably not.

I've ran a 4400 in my 1.8a system at 4600 speeds and always got artifacts, a friend of mine that is all up on the geforce4 bandwagon, said he thought it was software programing issues, I personal thought he was a crock.

if I were you I would just wait .. it won't be long, and it will probably be more trouble than it is worth to do all that .. my thoughts ..

i don't believe that that motherboard will take the athlon xp processor, since the xp is a different core i don't think that your motherboard will support it. i know that the earlier revisions of the kt7a don't even support it (i think you never rev 2.0 or later or something like that)
anyways your mobo is even older than the first kt7as so i would suggest that you not try it and just wait until you can buy your new motherboard, you don't want to risk ruining a perfectly good processor.

The thing is to get the full benifit of the XP core the mobo will need to enable sse instructions. If it doesn't just get a 1.4ghz TBird. That cpu will still run anything in the world.

Don't the XPs run at a lower voltage though? You'll be in trouble if the motherboard can't supply that voltage..

The bios dosen't support it. You need a 200mz bus processor.
Get a 1.4 gig or oc/a 1 gig to 1.4gig
It probably won't even post.
