Can I run an unsupported same socket cpu?

Hey guys I have been trying to use some old parts of mine to build a small home server. I have a machspeed p4m800 mobo that I think is fried. I have tried 2 cpus one that I know is good and it will not boot with it installed. (Proper cpus for the board) I checked and can not find any bad caps. If anyone has any ideas what else to check on the motherboard I am open to suggestion. I have tried alternate ram, different psu, with onboard video and with a seperate agp card. I can not for the life of me get the board to post. If i unplug the cpu 12v it will spin up the hard drives and cpu coolerfan but that is it.

So anyways, my question is; I have a intel d845ebg2 socket 478 motherboard that does not officially support the celeron d 340 processor I have. I am debating trying to run this chip in this board. The intel site states it can run celeron processesors up to 400mhz fsb to 2.6ghz i believe. It supports 533fsb P4 cpus. The d 340 is a 533fsb celeron.

If I try this will it fry the board/cpu?

it might work, and just say "unknown cpu" as the label.

sometimes it depends. if you have say a prescott based celeron, and the board supports northwood p4s, it might not work.

but if it supports say prescott p4s and your celeron is a prescott one that just isnt supported it will probably work on a lot of boards. usually if its the same family it will work even if the bios doesnt specifically know what the name of the cpu is.

I tried an e2180 on an old ecs mobo that was bundled with the e6300. It didn't boot, and it didn't fry the e2180, though it works perfectly fine with the e6300.

Hmm I will try it after work tomorrow then. The mobo is prescott compatible and the celeron is a prescott. I hope it works. I just wish i could fix this mach speed board. Lifetime warranty and the CS is permabusy.... Not to mention this old board doesnt even have a sata hookup.

Should be fine, at least you know it won't overvolt it in all probability (prescott compatible mobo). You can get cheap PCI sata cards for like $10 online that work pretty okay for older boxes if you just want the compatibility, though sometimes configuring them can be a pain. It's easiest to boot from an IDE OS drive, then have the Sata drive setup for storage (PCI isn't that fast anyway, so just get a WD Green or something if you go that route at all).

That addon sata card is a good idea I had not thought of. I went in for work this morning at 9 only to find out im 3-11 today....Ah well I got the grocery shopping done, but still no time to test. Ill update as soon as possible.

Keep us posted, it's interesting to read about experiments like this, 99% of the threads are about 25ghz overclocks of 64-core processors with 8-way sli video cards with 32gb gddr8 each. :p

Ok sorry for the long awaited reply. I tried and failed miserably yesterday doing everything in my power to get her to boot. No luck what so ever. I was wrong when I said that the d845 supported prescott core processors, I mixed that info up with the original Machspeed motherboard in question.

On another note now I have a new issue to push on with Machspeed, I purchased that motherboard in 2007, it has a lifetime warranty. I filled out the warranty card and fired it away when I got it home. I called them up on friday to complain that the board was dead and nothing I could do could make it fire up. I was told they never received my warranty card and I am basically SOL. That pisses me off.

Back to the server though, I ended up just using the ancient p4 1.7cpu with a random gig of ddr I had lying around with two of my older hard drives (a 200gig and a 80gig). I got her all up and running and installed in the closet. My intentions of having it transcode video are definitely now dreams until I can update that hardware. I am hoping I can find an old socket 478 board to run that celeron in.

Ouch, that's a lot of money to throw at an ancient machine...

I agree, as well I would have to purchase a stick of ddr2 as well. Not to mention I am in Canada so I am not sure if newegg.ca has anything comparable. I am going to give the whole setup a shot like this and if worst comes to worst I am sure it is a better investment to build a whole new budget machine for the server.
