Can I let my DSL provider know that I'm using a router?

I'm gonna call SBC about constant connection drops I've been having. Can I tell them that I've been using a linksys router or is that frowned upon?

you're safe.
I'm guessing you're too far away from them, tell them to turn down the bandwidth a little.

they might just say, we can't help you trouble-shoot problems if you have a router, contact the router's manufacturer. Plus they'll then just blame all your connection problems on the fact that you have a router.

DO NOT TELL THEM YOU HAVE A ROUTER. they will charge additional isp if you do. and yeah, you are probably far from them. whine to them and ask when speed will increase, then whine so more. :)

this is true. they will not do troubleshooting for you if you tell them you have a router that you did not buy from them. what you have to do prior to calling them is to disconnect the router and directly connect a pc to the modem. but you MIGHT run into a good tech and he'll be able to work around the "router issue"...more often than not, they're trained to place blame on the router unless you bought one from them.

SBC will NOT charge you for putting more than one home computer on the "network" but if you want extra IPs you'll have to pay for it AND you are only getting tech support for a router-less connection on a single computer.

i work for SBC/Yahoo DSL.

The company that I work for provides DSL service. It does not matter if you have a router or not. BUT we will not trouble shoot the router. We will trouble shoot the DSL down to the point where we can tell that it is what is causing your issue. WIth your drops it does not sound like a router issue.

amazing the rumors that go around ;) this is true for a CABLE ISP but not SBC DSL.

Thanks Nick. I'll disconnect the router and run it like that prior to calling them. What do you know, maybe the router was the problem :). It's really weird though, I had my router in "disconnect on idle" mode, but then every once in a while when I'll try to reconnect it'll fail with something like PPoE authentication failed. It'd usually reconnect after 4-5 attempts. So to prevent that I switched to "keep alive" mode, but now it disconnected by itself and I had the same problem reconnecting.

I don't really need the router though. All I have is my PC and playstation 2, which I use once every 2 weeks. The reason I use the router is because I don't want to install SBC software on my computer and have to dial up every time i reboot.

First I had it in connect on demand, max idle time 30 minutes. Then I changed to 24 hours. Then I changed it to keep alive, redial period 30 seconds. I think in that mode it never disconnects.

i dont understand

how can it be illegal

unless you are using a router to use a home connection to run an internet or gaming cafe its not illegal

do u get this problem when not using a router?

if so the route is not the issue at all

if you have a problem only while using the router, its a router issue

either way i dont see how they can give you any more information/help with you telling them you use a router

Most DSL providers could care less. OTOH, cable providers do. Most of the time, neither will provide support for routers.

Its not illegal, its just they say its against the AUP which is considered a contract.
