No thanks RossMan. It sounds like a good idea, but I'm not in a rush right now, and I probably can get one from my dad or something.

If your dad is willing to help you out just have him co-sign for an account and you can get a real authentic debit/check card instead of a gift credit card.

I've had mine since I was 16. Its just like a regular checking account, you have to have your parents co-sign with you. But yes, you can get one.

Surely you have one of these banks around?

Hmmm, I'll be sure to check it out. I'm at Washington Mutual right now, and they claimed that to get a check card requires that you enter a contract with Visa, and to enter a legal contract you have to be 18. I think it's baloney... so I'll check out BofA.

amdforever2: you got a usbank check card with nobody but you on it? I just went into usbank with my mom and they said the only way I can get one is if my mom signs as the primary, except even then, "only my mom can make transactions with it since it's signed to her"

Yeah, I think officially, if you're under 18 you're not supposed to have one, but some banks/branches/managers let it slide. Best of luck to you dpopiz and myself in getting one!

Fifth Third let me get a check card and account with them with a parents sig. when I was 16.

You CAN get a checking account and a check card if you have a parent as your custodian. Otherwise, you'll have to wait 'till you're 18.

Unless I'm totally missing what a check card is, you can get what you want through PayPal for free. Just open an account with any bank, electronically transfer funds to PayPal, and you can spend it through a Mastercard they will send you in the mail

Technically you're not supposed to have a Visa Check Card until you're 19 unless it's in your parent's name, in which case your parent would have to sign the slips which defeats the point. However, since people rarely check the signature...

ATM cards can be had prior to 18.

Checking accounts can most definitely be had prior to 18, with a parent as a cosigner. The account's still in your name and you can sign the checks, however.

man... it looks like visa and MC need to do more marketing because it seems that no one knows that a check card is a glorified ATM card and should come with any decent checking account
