I asked about banks on here a while ago, but I still haven't tried to apply for any until now. I can't find any bank that will give me a visa check card if I'm under 18, even on a custodial account. is there any place that does this?

I dont even think you can get a checking account if you are under 18. I could be wrong about this though...

credit union? I thought they were just for special groups of trustworthy people (teachers, lawyers, doctors, etc). are you saying anybody can get an account at a credit union? if so, what's the difference between a credit union and a bank?

I got an ATM card when I was 16, but I think this was before the check card thing was around. I had a joint account with my mom. Or, just have a parent open the account, and give the card to you. I dont see why that wouldnt work.

Credit Unions used to only allow certain groups of people to join but lately they're allowing allowing anyone to join a CU.

Why credit unions are better than bank's.

since you also asked about the visa check card, why don't you try Visa Buxx Card? most banks should offer this, and you can also Google "visa buxx card" to see which banks offer this. it works a lot like a visa check card, in that it's not credit and you can't overcharge.

you can also try Ecount or Webcertificate (same company). they will send you a plastic card for offline use.

Visa check card is just like your ATM card, except that you can also use it wherever Visa is accepted. you can use it to access your ATM, and purchase items online/offline just like a Visa credit card. it is not a credit card, and it will only allow you to charge up to the amount that is in your checking account.

I just called picked a Credit Union out of the blue located near Davis, California using howtojoinacu.org and here's what their new accounts rep said:

As long as you live in the city of Davis and can prove that (school ID, piece of junk mail, anything with your name and address) then you are eligible to join.

You have to be at least 16 years of age, minimum account balance is $5, debit/check cards are issued to people 16 and older, they had a wide variety of student products as well easy to qualify for credit cards, etc.

LOL She even offered to mail me an application and brochure info, I told her no thanks I live in Oregon and am calling for a lazy ass who should be calling themself.

I'm 16, and have tried to get a visa check card for quite some time. I've tried 4 local banks, both with and without a parent on the account. None of them have given me the card, but a few said I could have the checking account, and write checks. It's pretty weird, because most of my friends under 18 have their own, no parents on the account, and from the SAME BANK that I tried at. Go figure.

dpopiz & Cartman2003,

Another option is getting a gift credit card however they're not easy or cheap to re-charge. So it's best to save up $300 - $1,000 and buy one at one time and just use that.

I would be willing to order you a gift credit card if you can pay via money order or cashier's check, I can order your gift credit card from Fleet or Bank of America.

All you have to pay is the value of the card plus the fee, I will do it for free, lemme know if you are interested.

RossMAN's suggestion is a good one. My brother recently received on of these "gift credit cards" for his birthday. It's basically like a debit card with a preset value assigned to it, and purchases are deducted from that value. It's better than your ATM card because you can use it online, at stores, to buy things off infomercials, etc.

I can't remember, I just visited the website I linked above searched for Davis and chose a CU.

Put some effort into it and you'll find a CU which will give you an account with a debit/check card.

Bank of America gave me a Visa check card and checking account under 18 with parent on the account.
US Bank gave me a Visa check card and checking account under 18 with nobody but me on it.

Surely you have one of these banks around?

No thanks RossMan. It sounds like a good idea, but I'm not in a rush right now, and I probably can get one from my dad or something.
