Can I add a 2nd person to my car title?

My car has a lien on it. I would like to add my sister to the car title. Can you have more then 1 person on the title if their is a lien on it?
 
Probably, but you'll have to deal with the bank.


FYI what you're about to do is probably a bad idea. Buy her a $2500 beater, don't let her try to take over payments on your loan when you're still a signatory.
 
What do you mean I would have to deal with the bank? I couldn't just sign the back of the registration go to DMV and have her added? She would not take over the payments I would still do that.
 
My sister tends to be a bad driver. Rather then the police or someone else calling in the middle of the night, I would rather have them call her. And if she's on the title they would..

Do you mean registration, not title? And why exactly are people calling you in the middle of the night?

You have to deal with the bank. As it sits right now two parties own your car, you and your bank. You can not just sign off on the title and goto the DMV and get her added without the other party agreeing to it.

First off, they'd call whoever the registration/insurance is in which is seperate from the title.


Second, if she hurts someone I wouldn't be surprised if you were involved in the lawsuit. She needs to own the car free and clear, in my opinion

Don't blame us because you ask a vague question, part of which you don't even understand (title vs registration).

Yes, we're a bunch of smart asses but there are many that honestly want to be helpful.

Edit: Hell, you could have just asked what the difference between title and registration is and you would have gotten 127 posts expalining it.
 
to answer your question is yes.

to do so you have to go t the bank who own your loan have them redo your loan with your sister on it, then take that paper work down to the DMV to re-register your car with both your names.

May not because of the loan value vs what's owed. If he bought new, the used interest rate will probablly suck.

why didnt you just call the CA DMV and you could have gotten your answer in 1 phone call.

Where I live, they are pretty much the same thing. The registration is the only proof of ownership. When selling a car, the other person owns the car when:
-the old owner de-registers the car
-the new owner shows a bill of sale for the car
-the new owner registers the car

Once it's registered, it is officially your car.

while rude the answers (well most) were very helpful. you asked a very vague and incorrect question. they answered it best they could.

What you want to do is a VERY bad idea. it ranks up there with sticking your hand into a garbage disposal to see if it is working.
