Also, why do you think they have holes on the bottom of the hard drive? So they can be mounted upside down :)

Confirming that "yes". If it was not originally formatted in that orientation you might consider reformatting after it is in it's final position. You don't have to, but I would.

The idea of formatting a drive for the position it is in goes back to the days of the old Winchester drives and W/R heads that were positioned by stepping motors instead of servos. With modern drives it is a complete waste of time. Drives can be safely mounted in any position.

I said you didn't have to do that, I just said that I would. And I do a lot of things that other people dont - like reading the WHOLE post ;)

Mounting it on it's "back" shouldn't cause any problems. Unless you leave your case open all the time, you don't really want dust collecting on the controller.

If you do put it on it's back, be sure to lay something over the controller part of it.

Yes, your case maybe on, but dust still collects in a case unless you have no dust in your house (probably not the likely case)

anyways, just a suggestion.

I thought Winchester made rifles back in the day :) . Some of those hard drives probably would have been better off as rifles. :)

Mounting your HDD upside down is fine, just try to limit the amount of dust and debris that you allow to build up on it.

but only if you turn the case upside down.

Or the house.

Mounting a ten floor high building upside down *could* create some additional problems.. so try at your own risk. And ask from neighbours first!
