Confirming that "yes". If it was not originally formatted in that orientation you might consider reformatting after it is in it's final position. You don't have to, but I would.
The idea of formatting a drive for the position it is in goes back to the days of the old Winchester drives and W/R heads that were positioned by stepping motors instead of servos. With modern drives it is a complete waste of time. Drives can be safely mounted in any position.
Mounting it on it's "back" shouldn't cause any problems. Unless you leave your case open all the time, you don't really want dust collecting on the controller.

I thought Winchester made rifles back in the day . Some of those hard drives probably would have been better off as rifles.
