Can a S/PDIF signal carry Dolby or DTS data?

Try a DVD first so we can take some variables out of what's going on.

I don't remember trying it with a DTS track, but I know DD works for sure.

and since I'm asking questions is there a way to somehow identify what type of sound date (dolby, etc..) is encoded in a video clip

There is a program called gspot that will identify both the Audio and the Video codec in a file... just be careful when googling for it!
