Can a S/PDIF signal carry Dolby or DTS data?

I just recently purchased a Chaintech AV710 for the S/PDIF output, I have it currently connected to my receiver but I can't seem to get Dolby or DTS sound. Anyone know what I need to do to get surround sound from the card's optical out?

lol, yeah he's pretty good with anything audio related

awww fvck it... yeah, just set the output to AC3 rather than PCM and it should pass the stream.
I don't remember trying it with a DTS track, but I know DD works for sure.

dude you are the man, I'm going to give that a shot

and since I'm asking questions is there a way to somehow identify what type of sound date (dolby, etc..) is encoded in a video clip

Sure you do. If you don't then it'll bother you for the rest of your life. You'll have nightmares about not helping someone with their audio problem. It will haunt you for all of time. You'll wake up in the middle of the night screaming and pouring sweat.

I only lasted like a minute before I had to answer.

Not sure on testing what kind of sound it has on clips. What's your source material?

I have lots of different avi and mpeg clips, I think most of them are encoded with XVID.

Did you get some drivers from via arena?

There should be a control program in your system tray area (aww crap, what do you call it? The icons in the lower right... I'm no good at windows terminology)

I see ;)

A lot of those tend to be just stereo sound I think. I've seen several DD encoded ones, nothing DTS though that I've seen.

I just used the drivers from the CD which are pretty old (I think they're dated 2003). I'll check the sys tray now to see what options are there.

What's arena?

"PrologicII movie" / "Neo:6 Cinema" works pretty well for the stereo ones.

You'll have much more control over what's going on with that program.

It's pretty basic but it does everything you'll need it to.

Set it to standard 2.0 and then you can mess around with checkboxes and stuff.

I've heard that the newest ones might not be the best. If something isn't quite working right you may want to look around and see if you can get an older version of them (but newer than what comes on your cd)

should there be a control panel somewhere, I poked around in Device Manager but could'nt find a way to alter the output settings. Also should I run the setup or just let windows update the driver?

Uhhh.... how about uninstall the current drivers, restart, and then install the via arena drivers you downloaded when it asks where the drivers are?

Now, if you'll excuse me.... I have to see if I'm going to get told to go eat some ice cream or not

sorry to keep bugging you with this, but I hit another snag

I have the drivers updated and the control panel present but when I attempt to test my 5.1 setup I can only get sound from the 2 front speakers in PCM mode. AC3 does'nt seem to work, is there another setting or tweak I need to adjust.

Still hitting a brick wall on this one, I installed the AC3 filter thinking that would force the card to ouput surround but no dice. I think the problem is that the card does'nt recognize any AC3 signals/data for some reason it only plays 2 channel PCM. When I force the card to play only AC3 in the Via control panel I get no sound.
