Can a S/PDIF signal carry Dolby or DTS data?

yep, I'm even using the AC3 filter to covert all sound to that format.

Try a DVD first so we can take some variables out of what's going on.

awww fvck it... yeah, just set the output to AC3 rather than PCM and it should pass the stream.
I don't remember trying it with a DTS track, but I know DD works for sure.

and since I'm asking questions is there a way to somehow identify what type of sound date (dolby, etc..) is encoded in a video clip

There is a program called gspot that will identify both the Audio and the Video codec in a file... just be careful when googling for it! 😉
