Can a backpack look professional?

I just bought a new 13" Macbook Pro, and while researching for the best bag, I happened upon the Booq brand. Every review I read about them is amazing. They make mostly backpacks though. The question is, does a backpack really look professional? I work in IT and carry equipment with me, and also go to meetings a lot, so I need to look professional. Will a backpack be ok for this or should I be looking for something else?

I have a Booq for my laptop but it's a messenger bag. Personally I think it would look silly having on a backpack while wearing a suit but

Professional? No, probably not. You'll most likely need some "fancy" looking messenger bag or over the shoulder leather laptop case.

!!! I want, just needs to be green.

How much equipment do you have to carry as a macbook jockey?
Shouldn't everything that you need is loaded on the macbook and a few CDs?

I used to carry everything to meetings in a cloth grocery bag. My boss bought me a briefcase.

The briefcase is great as it's one of those hard plastic mini-suitcase types so I can carry all the docs I need plus camera, calculator, cellphone, hard drive, GPS, and two liters of D MD.

But the turtle backpack? I might switch for the turtle backpack.

We used to have engineers who would wear a suit and carry equipment and parts in a backpack. As long as you pick a conservative color and don't dress like a slob you should look just fine.

Booq also makes messenger bags though, like this:

When in doubt, choose black. If you're really, really worried, pick Samsonite or Tumi.

This. I've seen execs at my company wearing laptop backpacks with suits. As long as it's not some ridiculous color it should be fine.

There are sleek-looking backpacks like the AXIO packs, and there are the Thinkpads of backpacks like the Tumis, but I'm not sure if any backpack is 'professional' in the old sense.

However professional is as professional does, and there's increasingly no particular 'how to appear professional' anymore. Even when I wear a (tailored) suit I never wear a tie anymore. If you can carry it off, wear it.

If by profession, youre useing the actual definition and not some made up bullshit we have to live with in the tech industry, "Motherboard Ultra PRO" etc, then yes. if your profession required it. Then its by definition professional.

What kind of question is this

No. The closest you can get is a nice messenger bag. I've seen lots of different business-oriented backpacks, they just don't work.

But it's so much better for your shoulders, I don't care. I take my Ogio to work 😀

I don't think they look very professional but there's some nice ones out there. I'd opt for a messenger-style bag, personally.

As an IT PM, I take a backpack with my laptop and stuff to meetings all the time. I have consultants that do also. Who cares...
